EPISODE 2️⃣: Lessons to be Learnt

📍The mandation of enjoining Allaah’s commands.

The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “Whoever among you sees an evil action, let him change it with his hand [by taking action]; and if he cannot, then with his tongue [by speaking out]; and if he cannot, then with his heart [by feeling that it is wrong] – and that is the weakest of faith.”
(Narrated by Muslim, 49)

An-Nawawī (رحمه الله) stated when commenting on the above statement: “Let him change it with his hand” the following: “Therefore, it is a mandatory affair, as agreed by the Imams”
(Sharh Saheeh Muslim, vol.2, pg. 22)

Ibn Taymiyyah (رحمه الله) said: “The scholars of the religion have agreed that enjoining the good and forbidding the evil is mandatory upon the people”
(Jaami’ al-Masaail, vol 3, pg. 381)

Why did Allaah (ﷻ) tell us about a people that lived and died hundreds of generations ago? It is because there is an alarming similarity between their situation and the current situation of the Muslim Ummah.

The “in-betweeners” – the passive group of the Muslim community – want to be left alone, to live in their own bubble, too indifferent and cowardly to stand up for goodness or speak up against falsehood. They want to be left alone and remain in their spiritual status quo. They do not want to be involved in spreading the deen or guiding the rest of society. They adhere to Allaah’s teachings, but are indifferent with others (even other Muslims) who disobey. They even indirectly participate in the wrongdoing without realizing the gravity of their actions. These are the people who assume that as long as they are worshipping Allaah, what anyone else does is not their problem.

This is wrong, as we can see from the above Hadeeth and its explanations. The story of the Sabbath breakers proves that there is no rescue from Allaah’s torment unless we remind and advise others to fear Allaah and remedy their behaviour.

📍The Price of Disobedience

When Allaah (ﷻ) prohibits something, it is not wise for one who claims to believe in Allaah (ﷻ) to find loopholes, technicalities and other excuses to get around the prohibitions. These actions are not justified at all, and will place one in great peril. Obedience to Allaah (ﷻ) should be in substance, not just in technical terms.

Imam Abu Abdullaah bin Battah (رحمه الله) reported that Abu Hurayrah (رَضِّيْ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ) said that the Messenger of Allaah (ﷺ) said, (referring to the Sabbath breakers):
“Do not commit what the Jews committed, breaching what Allaah has forbidden, by resorting to the lowest types of deceit.”

It goes without saying that sins bring the calamity of Allaah upon us. Do not think that you are smarter than Allaah (ﷻ), for this is a challenge that you will most definitely lose.

We ask Allaah (ﷻ) to guide us to that which is right.

آمِيْن يَارَبَّ الْعَالَمِينْ
