Episode 2️⃣ – The Explanation
Musa (عليه سلام) asked his Lord and he was commanded to order them to slaughter a cow. When Musa (عليه سلام) told them, they thought it was just a joke and said;
(Interpretation of the meaning)
‘They said, “Call upon your Lord to clarify for us what type ˹of cow˺ it should be!” He replied, “Allaah says, ‘The cow should neither be old nor young but in between. So do as you are commanded!’”
Ibn Abbas, Ubaidah, Ikrimah, As-Sadiy, and others said:
‘If they were to slaughter any cow, they would fulfill the purpose thereof. But, they made it difficult for themselves (by asking many questions), and thus Allaah (ﷻ) made it difficult for them (by stipulating many conditions for the desired cow). They asked about its description, color, and age and they were answered with what was scarce.
The point was that they were commanded to slaughter a neither too old nor too young cow, but they pressed themselves with their questions and they were replied by given conditions which were scarce and dare.
It is said that they could not find a cow with all these descriptions but with a man who was righteous and good to his father. They asked him to sell it to them but he refused. They tried to seduce him to its price till they offered him what equals its weight in gold. But he refused, then they offered him an amount of gold that equals its weight ten times. Finally, he accepted their offer and sold it to them.
Then, Musa (عليه سلام) commanded them to slaughter it. They slaughtered it but they were hesitant. Then Musa (عليه سلام) instructed them with the command of Allaah (ﷻ) to strike the dead body with a piece of the cow. When they struck him, he was resurrected by Allaah (ﷻ). Musa (عليه سلام) asked him about his murderer he told him that it was his nephew then died again.
The lesson in this story is very simple. Allaah’s commandments are simple, easy and straightforward. Had the Jews accepted the first order and slaughtered any cow, it would have been accepted from them. But they argued with Allaah and made the simple order complex. It has always been the people, not Allaah who makes matters difficult and complicated.
Many of the people like to show off, look smart, or look knowledgeable and therefore they take the simple religion of Allaah and add to it their wrong understanding. They make simple matters difficult. They change the religion of God to the point it does not become God’s religion any more.
May Allaah make us among those who understand and benefit from this story.
