Episode 2️⃣: Start With The Sunnah Rites

Almost every action or situation in the life of a believer has a specific dua to be recited or rites to be done before and/or after that action. For instance, there are specific dua and actions to be observed before and after entering the lavatory, as well as before and after sleeping.
It’s the same in the case of receiving new babies into the family; Islam has elevated the status of children and has laid down manners for their treatment through different stages of their lives which starts just immediately after their birth.
🔹 Calling the adhaan in the right ear of the baby;
Among the Sunnahs for welcoming the newborn, the scholars mentioned that the Adhaan should be recited into the baby’s right ear so that the first thing he hears in this world will be the words of Tawheed, which will have a great and blessed effect on the child. With regard to reciting the iqaamah in the child’s left ear, there is nothing to prove that this is required.
(al-Silsilat al-Da’eefah, 1/491 by Sheikh al-Albany).
🔹 Tahneek and to seek Allaah’s blessings on the child:
Tahneek is the act of putting something sweet such as dates or honey in the baby’s mouth when he/she is born. This is an act recommended by the Prophet (ﷺ). The dates should be softened by chewing before placing them in the baby’s mouth.
Asma’ (رضي الله عنها) reported that she had become pregnant at Mecca with Abdullah b. Zubair (رضي الله عنه) (in her womb) and she (further) said:
.…I came to Medina and got down at the place known as Quba’ and gave birth to a child there. Then I came to Allaah’s Messenger (ﷺ). He placed him (the child) in his lap and then commanded for the dates to be brought. He chewed them and then put the saliva in his mouth. The first thing which went into his stomach was the saliva of Allaah’s Messenger (ﷺ). He then rubbed his palate with dates and then invoked blessings for him and blessed him. He was the first child who was born in Islam (after Migration).
(Sahih Muslim, book 38, Hadith no. 31)
🔹 The child can be named on the first day or the seventh day;
It was reported that Anas ibn Maalik (رضي الله عنه) said: the Messenger of Allaah (ﷺ) said: “A boy was born to me this night and I have named him with the name of my father Ibraaheem.”
(Narrated by Muslim, 3126).
It was reported that ‘Aa’ishah (رضي الله عنها) said: the Messenger of Allaah (ﷺ) did ‘aqeeqah for al-Hasan and al-Husayn on the seventh day, and gave them their names.
(Narrated by Ibn Hibbaan, 12/127; al-Haakim, 4/264.
🔹 Aqeeqah
This simply means the sacrifice of an animal (a ram in particular) on behalf of the baby on the seventh day after birth; and for parents who are not financially capable of making the aqeeqah – there’s no fault on them if they do at the convenient time.
Narrated Yusuf bin Mahak (رضي الله عنه)
They entered upon Hafsah bint ‘Abdur-Rahman to ask her about the ‘Aqiqah. She informed them that ‘Aishah had informed her that the Messenger of Allaah (ﷺ) ordered them that for a boy, two sheep were sufficient, and for a girl one sheep.
(Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1513)
One of such scholars who stated the benefits of aqeeqah is Sheikh Ibn al-Qayyim (رحمه الله), he said;
Among the benefits of ‘aqeeqah is that it is a sacrifice that is offered on behalf of the newborn when he first emerges into this world, it “releases” the newborn so that he may intercede for his parents; then, he likened the ransom that is paid for the newborn just as Allaah, may He be exalted, ransomed Ismaa’eel with the ram.
(Tuhfat al-Mawdood, p. 69)
