Sleep Less, Seek More
Allah ﷻ says
كَانُوا۟ قَلِيلًۭا مِّنَ ٱلَّيْلِ مَا يَهْجَعُونَ
They used to sleep but little at night
Mufasireen are differed on two opinions,
- They used to spend a little part of the night in worship of Allah ﷻ
- They used to spend a little time of their night asleep.
وَبِٱلْأَسْحَارِ هُمْ يَسْتَغْفِرُونَ
And in the hours before dawn, they were asking for forgiveness
Meaning they would stand in Salah and ask for forgiveness in the latter part of the night nearer to Dawn.
So they Sleep Less and Seek (Forgiveness) More!
وَفِىٓ أَمْوَٰلِهِمْ حَقٌّۭ لِّلسَّآئِلِ وَٱلْمَحْرُومِ
And from their properties was [given] the right of the [needy] petitioner and the deprived.
[51:17-19]
After Allah ﷻ mentioned their quality of performing prayer, He then mentioned their quality of spending in charity and acts of compassion and kindness
_
A Sa’il is the person who begs others and he has a right to do so.
A Mahrum is the poor person who does not receive a stipend, nor has any income.
_
What do they earn?
Allah ﷻ mentioned the reward a few Ayaat earlier.
إِنَّ ٱلْمُتَّقِينَ فِى جَنَّٰتٍۢ وَعُيُونٍ
Verily, those who have Taqwa will be amongst Gardens and Springs.
[51:15]

After this, Allah ﷻ calls for contemplation.
وَفِى ٱلْأَرْضِ ءَايَٰتٌۭ لِّلْمُوقِنِينَ
And on the Earth are signs for those who have faith with certainty
[51:20]
Allah ﷻ says that there are signs on earth that testify to the might of the Creator and His boundless ability.
وَفِىٓ أَنفُسِكُمْ ۚ أَفَلَا تُبْصِرُونَ
And also in yourselves. Will you not then see
[51:21]
Qatadah commented, “He who thinks about his own creation will realize that he was created with flexible joints so that it is easy for him to perform acts of worship.’
وَفِى ٱلسَّمَآءِ رِزْقُكُمْ
And in the heaven is your provision,
meaning, rain,
وَمَا تُوعَدُونَ
and that which you are promised.
[51:22]
Meaning Paradise. This was said by Ibn `Abbas and Mujahid.

In a beautiful Hadith
Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Our Lord Almighty descends to the lowest heaven in the last third of every night, saying: Who is calling upon Me that I may answer him? Who is asking from Me that I may give him? Who is seeking My forgiveness that I may forgive him?”
[Sahih al-Bukhārī 1145, Sahih Muslim 758]
