EPISODE 1️⃣: REFUTATIONS OF SUPERSTITIONS BASED ON THE QUR’AN AND SUNNAH
Superstitions are mere intuition in believing what is not actually true or in existence, and of course it is a form of shirk (polytheism); one of the greatest sins in Islam, since it means believing something might cause a bad luck or bring about a good luck, or believing an incidence as being an evil omen.
As the Prophet (ﷺ) said: Taking omens is polytheism; taking omens is polytheism. He said it three times. Every one of us has some, but Allaah removes it by trust (in Him).
(Graded as sahih by Al-Albani in sunan Abi Dawud 3910)
Apart from Allaah (ﷻ), His Prophet (ﷺ) and the pious predecessors, there’s nobody or anything else to believe in or learn from.
Allaah (ﷻ) tells us in the Holy Qur’an,
فَإِذَا جَآءَتۡهُمُ ٱلۡحَسَنَةُ قَالُواْ لَنَا هَٰذِهِۦۖ وَإِن تُصِبۡهُمۡ سَيِّئَةٌ يَطَّيَّرُواْ بِمُوسَىٰ وَمَن مَّعَهُۥٓۗ أَلَآ إِنَّمَا طَٰئِرُهُمۡ عِندَ ٱللَّهِ وَلَٰكِنَّ أَكۡثَرَهُمۡ لَا يَعۡلَمُونَ
But when good [i.e., provision] came to them, they said, “This is ours [by right].” And if a bad [condition] struck them, they saw an evil omen in Moses and those with him. Unquestionably, their fortune is with Allaah, but most of them do not know.
(Al-A’raf 7:131)
It was narrated from Anas ibn Maalik (رضي الله عنه) that the Prophet (ﷺ) said:
“There is no ‘adwa (transmission of infectious disease without the permission of Allaah) and no tiyarah (superstitious belief in bird omens), but I like optimism.” They said, “What is optimism?” He said, “A good word.”
(Sahih al-Bukhaari 5776).
From the evidences above, a good Muslim would believe that superstitions are totally prohibited in Islam, as it causes nothing but more harm and destruction in a person’s life. Some superstitious beliefs in our society include;
▪️ Facing a shoe upside down causes poverty.
▪️Sweeping the floor during the evening brings bad luck – something important might get lost.
▪️When a black cat horizontally crosses the path of some people going on a journey, the journey will be fruitless and as such, they should cancel.
▪️ Calling someone a witch or a wizard because he/she is aged.
