THE EVIL OF FABRICATED HADITH, ITS TREND ON SOCIAL MEDIA AND ITS DANGER TO THE UMMAH
Episode 1
The danger of ignorance and laziness that has fallen upon the ummah
How often do you receive a message or see a post from a contact saying ‘the Prophet ﷺ said’ without any reference as to the channel of the report (narrators, reporter, the book of hadith etc)?
This is such a worrisome ignorance that has become part and parcel of today’s ummah and many are not aware this is one of the major sins.
Many rejected, fabricated, weak and extremely weak hadith are regularly circulated around social media channels and websites on a daily basis. This disease has become a fast-growing contagious virus that has spread all over the world, and no matter how hard we try to establish the cure; this virus has consumed the tree from the root, its branches, and the leaves.
This disease starts from when a brother receives a broadcast from a contact, without investigating the authenticity of the contents; fooled by the miracles, rewards or praises of the Prophet ﷺ mentioned in the text, he immediately forward to all his contacts list. The majority of those who receive such messages are equally to be fooled as the sender, so they all copy and paste to the third set of people and the number keeps growing till the fabricator has achieved his goal of deceiving the entire Ummah except for few (those who are knowledgeable).
Telling lies about the Prophet ﷺ is tantamount to telling lies about Allaah ﷻ because what the Messenger ﷺ commanded is what Allaah ﷻ commanded and must be followed just as the commands of Allaah must be followed. Whatever he forbade is what Allaah has forbidden as Allaah said:
وَمَا يَنطِقُ عَنِ ٱلۡهَوَىٰٓ
Nor does he speak from [his own] inclination.
Allaah ﷻ laid emphasis on the commands to believe and follow the Messenger ﷺ in several verses of the Qur’an among which are Suratul at-Taghabun Q64:8; al-Fath 48:9; al-Fath 48:13 etc. These emphasis made us understand that whatever the Prophet ﷺ say is not equal to whatever any other person say, as such, lying against him is tantamount to lying against Whom has sent him. And Allaah ﷻ said:
وَمَنۡ أَظۡلَمُ مِمَّنِ ٱفۡتَرَىٰ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ كَذِبًا…
“And who is more unjust than one who invents a lie about Allaah…”
[Sura Al-Ankabut, Ayah 68]
The evil of how fabricated, da’eef (weak) hadith are being spread and used in recent times most especially by the people of desires (the misguided sect) has become unmanageable and this evil, regardless the amount of dawah put in by the Ahl Sunnah, we fear will live with us for a very long time; if not forever.
Anytime we receive this weak and fabricated post from a contact, it comes to mind; “does my contact not reason?” or he is just naturally gullible, easily fooled by almost everything that sounds good. Or, it is due to his laziness to make substantial research. Or, it is due to his ignorance. Or, maybe he is not aware of the self-destruction attached to spreading a lie about the Prophet ﷺ.
