﷽
A very powerful reminder
Allah ﷻ says in Surah Hadid
ٱعْلَمُوٓا۟ أَنَّمَا ٱلْحَيَوٰةُ ٱلدُّنْيَا لَعِبٌ وَلَهْوٌ وَزِينَةٌ وَتَفَاخُرٌۢ بَيْنَكُمْ وَتَكَاثُرٌ فِى ٱلْأَمْوَٰلِ وَٱلْأَوْلَٰدِۖ
Know that this worldly life is no more than play, amusement, luxury, mutual boasting, and competition in wealth and children.[57:20]
Allah ﷻ sums up the stages of our life,
We play when we are young.
When we are teens, we only look for amusement and entertainment.
When we are adults, its all about flashing our wealth and women and boasting about them.
When we are old, we boast about our accumulation of accolade, wealth and achievement. And also that of our children!
But this Dunya is perishable, even though we place such great emphasis on it!
The very same Ayah Allah brings a parable!
كَمَثَلِ غَيْثٍ أَعْجَبَ ٱلْكُفَّارَ نَبَاتُهُۥ ثُمَّ يَهِيجُ فَتَرَىٰهُ مُصْفَرًّا ثُمَّ يَكُونُ حُطَٰمًاۖ
This is like rain that causes plants to grow, to the delight of the planters. But later the plants dry up and you see them wither, then they are reduced to chaff.
Allah ends the ayah by saying
وَفِى ٱلْءَاخِرَةِ عَذَابٌ شَدِيدٌ وَمَغْفِرَةٌ مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ وَرِضْوَٰنٌۚ وَمَا ٱلْحَيَوٰةُ ٱلدُّنْيَآ إِلَّا مَتَٰعُ ٱلْغُرُورِ
And in the Hereafter there will be either severe punishment or forgiveness and pleasure of Allah, whereas the life of this world is no more than the delusion of enjoyment.
[57:20]
This Dunya! It will perish, and so does everything in it!
Prophet ﷺ said about the Dunya that “By Allah, this world in comparison to the hereafter is nothing but as though one of you dipped his finger in the sea. So ponder how much the finger returns with.”
[Sahih Muslim 2858]
So why have we fooled ourselves and let ourselves be distracted?
Why have we let ourselves become blinded and ignorant when it comes to prioritising Deen and Dunya?
And we can all claim to put Deen over Dunya and will point to examples. But ask yourselves, how many of these examples, required real sacrifices?
Required real strength and steadfastness?
Or was the reason we did it, that it was easy! But that which is difficult, we stay silent and are averse to it.
We need to really recognise the less than nothing value the Dunya has, And the priceless eternal value the Akhirah has.
As Abdullah ibn Al Mubarak رحمه الله wrote “The Dunya is like a piece of snow which melts quickly and is inexpensive, and the Akhirah is like a rare jewel which is priceless and does not perish”
So why, oh slave of Allah! Why are you clutching on to snow, as it melts!
When the priceless jewel sits before you!
