A Rampant Evil on Social Media
Tabarruj is the wanton display of the beauty of a woman to her non-mahrams.
Allaah (ﷻ) says:
…And abide in your houses and do not display yourselves as [was] the display of the former times of ignorance…
(Al-Ahzaab, 33:33)
The Mufassiroon said, regarding this Ayah:
Women used to go out walking in front of men (in a shameless and flirtatious manner), and this was the Tabarruj of Jahiliyyah.
Tabarruj is when a woman puts a Khimar on her head but does not tie it properly. So her necklaces, earrings and neck, and all of that can be seen.
(Tafseer Ibn Katheer)
With the prevalence of social media, committing tabarruj has become easier. Sisters post pictures of themselves in provocative looks and poses, placing themselves where the entire world would see, exposing parts meant to be covered by either leaving them open or making the covers too tight or see-through, leaving little to the imagination.
The Prophet (ﷺ) said:
“There are two kinds of the people of Hell…women who are clothed yet naked, walking with an enticing gait with something on their heads looking like the humps of camels, leaning to one side. They will not enter Paradise or even smell its fragrance.”
(Sahih Muslim, Book 40, Number 6840)
Allaah (ﷻ) commanded Muslims to lower their gazes, but with the facilitation of these sisters and temptations of Shaitaan, it becomes harder for them to do so.
Tell the believing men to lower their gaze (from looking at forbidden things)…
(An-Noor, 24:30)
On social media, no matter how it seems, there is absolutely no control over who views a person’s picture and ultimately, what they proceed to do with it.
By men viewing these photos, almost all the acts of tabarruj have been committed. He is also, of course, disobeying Allaah, aided by the woman.
The ‘awrah of a woman in front of her non-mahrams is her entire being. Allaah says:
“…and not expose their adornment except that which [necessarily] appears thereof…and not expose their adornment except to their husbands, their fathers, their husbands’ fathers, their sons, their husbands’ sons, their brothers, their brothers’ sons, their sisters’ sons, their women, that which their right hands possess, or those male attendants having no physical desire or children who are not yet aware of the private aspects of women…”
(An-Noor 24:31)
Tabarruj is an evil that may lead to many other evils. It may create filthy desires in the hearts of men and some may even act on such desires.
Shaykh ‘Abd al-‘Azeez ibn Baaz (رحمه الله) said:
In these two verses, Allaah commands the believing men and women to lower their gaze and guard their chastity, which is because of the serious nature of zina and what it leads to of great corruption among the Muslims. Letting one’s gaze wander freely is one of the causes of sickness in the heart and the occurrence of immoral actions, whereas lowering the gaze is one of the means of keeping oneself safe from that.
(al-Tabarruj wa Khataruhu)
May Allaah (ﷻ) continue to guide our actions, Aameen.
