An Easy Way to Relieve Depression
Sujud ash-Shukr is a prostration which is performed for Allaah (ﷻ), to show Shukr (thankfulness and gratitude) to Him (ﷻ) for a specific blessing.
It is a common scene today especially when watching sports to see a Muslim player suddenly make a sujud when he scores a goal or an athlete when they win a race or breaks a record, he makes sujud. Have you ever wondered why they do that? It is indeed an expression of gratefulness to Allaah (ﷻ) for that which they just achieved.
However, Sujud ash-Shukr is not performed for blessings in general, rather it is only performed for a specific blessing at a specific time such as a person being blessed with the birth of a child, getting a job or passing an exam.
It can also be performed when specific harm is alleviated from a person such as being cured of an illness or being saved from calamity.
Allaah (ﷻ) says:
“And whatever you have of favour – it is from Allaah. Then when adversity touches you, to Him you cry for help.”
(An-Nahl 16:53)

As soon as a person hears of a specific blessing, it is recommended for him to immediately prostrate to Allaah (ﷻ) saying:
سبحان ربي الأعلى
“Glorified is my Lord, the Highest.”
Allaah (ﷻ) also say:
“O you who have believed, bow and prostrate and worship your Lord and do good – that you may succeed.”
(Al-Hajj 22:77)
Abu Bakr (رضي الله عنه) said: “whenever the Prophet (ﷺ) was pleased by a matter or was given the glad tidings of a matter, he would go into prostration as a form of shukr to Allaah.”

Does a person have to be in a state of Wudhu?
➖➖➖
“The correct opinion is that it is not obligated upon a person to be in a state of Wudhu when performing Sujood ash-Shukr. This is because the reason for performing it is due to an occurrence of a blessing or removal of harm, and there is no specific time for this in which a person can prepare for it. In such a case, whenever a person is blessed, he/she should immediately perform Sujood ash-Shukr in whatever state he/she is in.”

It is empirical for Muslims to embrace this act as it was a common practice of the Prophet (ﷺ) and his companions, to show gratitude to Allaah (ﷻ).
Sujud ash-Shukr is also a means to relieve depression, through which one recalls the blessings of Allaah in it.
May Allaah (ﷻ) grant us the ability to remember and apply it as often as we can in our daily lives.
آمِيْن يَارَبَّ الْعَالَمِينْ
