Episode 1️⃣ – The Narration
Allaah (ﷻ) says in the Glorious Qur’aan:
وَإِذْ قَالَ مُوسَىٰ لِقَوْمِهِۦٓ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ يَأْمُرُكُمْ أَن تَذْبَحُوا۟ بَقَرَةً ۖ قَالُوٓا۟ أَتَتَّخِذُنَا هُزُوًا ۖ قَالَ أَعُوذُ بِٱللَّهِ أَنْ أَكُونَ مِنَ ٱلْجَـٰهِلِينَ
And ˹remember˺ when Moses said to his people, “Allaah commands you to sacrifice a cow.” They replied, “Are you mocking us?” Moses responded, “I seek refuge in Allaah from acting foolishly!”
قَالُوا۟ ٱدْعُ لَنَا رَبَّكَ يُبَيِّن لَّنَا مَا هِىَ ۚ قَالَ إِنَّهُۥ يَقُولُ إِنَّهَا بَقَرَةٌ لَّا فَارِضٌ وَلَا بِكْرٌ عَوَانٌۢ بَيْنَ ذَٰلِكَ ۖ فَٱفْعَلُوا۟ مَا تُؤْمَرُونَ
They said, “Call upon your Lord to clarify for us what type ˹of cow˺ it should be!” He replied, “Allaah says, ‘The cow should neither be old nor young but in between. So do as you are commanded!’”
قَالُوا۟ ٱدْعُ لَنَا رَبَّكَ يُبَيِّن لَّنَا مَا لَوْنُهَا ۚ قَالَ إِنَّهُۥ يَقُولُ إِنَّهَا بَقَرَةٌ صَفْرَآءُ فَاقِعٌ لَّوْنُهَا تَسُرُّ ٱلنَّـٰظِرِينَ
They said, “Call upon your Lord to specify for us its color.” He replied, “Allaah says, ‘It should be a bright yellow cow—pleasant to see.’”
قَالُوا۟ ٱدْعُ لَنَا رَبَّكَ يُبَيِّن لَّنَا مَا هِىَ إِنَّ ٱلْبَقَرَ تَشَـٰبَهَ عَلَيْنَا وَإِنَّآ إِن شَآءَ ٱللَّهُ لَمُهْتَدُونَ
Again they said, “Call upon your Lord so that He may make clear to us which cow, for all cows look the same to us. If Allah wills it, we will be guided to the right one˺.”
قَالَ إِنَّهُۥ يَقُولُ إِنَّهَا بَقَرَةٌ لَّا ذَلُولٌ تُثِيرُ ٱلْأَرْضَ وَلَا تَسْقِى ٱلْحَرْثَ مُسَلَّمَةٌ لَّا شِيَةَ فِيهَا ۚ قَالُوا۟ ٱلْـَٔـٰنَ جِئْتَ بِٱلْحَقِّ ۚ فَذَبَحُوهَا وَمَا كَادُوا۟ يَفْعَلُونَ
He replied, “Allaah says, ‘It should have been used neither to till the soil nor water the fields; wholesome and without blemish.’” They said, “Now you have come with the truth.” Yet they still slaughtered it hesitantly!
وَإِذْ قَتَلْتُمْ نَفْسًا فَٱدَّرَٰتُمْ فِيهَا ۖ وَٱللَّهُ مُخْرِجٌ مَّا كُنتُمْ تَكْتُمُونَ
And [recall] when you slew a man and disputed it, but Allaah was to bring out that which you were concealing.
فَقُلْنَا ٱضْرِبُوهُ بِبَعْضِهَا ۚ كَذَٰلِكَ يُحْىِ ٱللَّهُ ٱلْمَوْتَىٰ وَيُرِيكُمْ ءَايَـٰتِهِۦ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَعْقِلُونَ
So We instructed, “Strike the dead body with a piece of the cow.” This is how ˹easily˺ Allaah brings the dead to life, showing you His signs so that you may understand.
[Al-Baqarah 2:67-73]
Abdullah ibn Abbas, Ubaidah as-Salmani, Abu al-aliyah, Mujahid, and other earlier scholars said: an old man from among the children of Israel was very rich, and] he had some nephews who wished he would die soon to inherit him. one day, one of them murdered him at night and threw him on the road.
In the morning, the people found the dead body and they disputed over him. His nephew (the murderer) came and began to weep and cry. Some people said: why do you dispute over him? Why don’t you go to Allaah’s Prophet? His nephew went and complained to Musa (عليه سلام). Musa (عليه سلام) said: by Allaah! Anyone who knows anything about this murdered man should let us know. Since nobody knew, they asked Musa (عليه سلام) to ask his Lord.
