An Obligatory Upon All Muslims

Seeking knowledge is an obligation upon every Muslim and it is a very important dimension in Islam. It is so important that Allaah (ﷻ) specifically chose to address it when He first revealed the Qur’an message to Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ).

Allaah (ﷻ) say:

Recite in the name of your Lord who created
[96:1]

It is obligatory upon us not to act except with knowledge, and not worship Allaah (ﷻ) except with knowledge, so we do not worship Allaah (ﷻ) anyhow, as we wish or following desires.

Allaah (ﷻ) also say:

So know, [O Muhammad], that there is no deity except Allaah and ask forgiveness for your sin and for the believing men and believing women. And Allaah knows of your movement and your resting place.
[47:19]

Allaah (ﷻ) say:

Only those who fear Allaah, from among His servants, are those who have knowledge.
[35:28]

And when you are told, “Arise,” then arise; Allaah will raise those who have believed among you and those who were given knowledge, by degrees.
[58:11]

The Glorious Qur’an urges mankind to think, ponder, reflect and acquire knowledge that would bring them closer to Allaah (ﷻ) and His creation.

Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) commanded knowledge upon all Muslims, and urged them to seek knowledge as far they could reach, and also to seek it all times.

Abu Hurairah reported the Prophet (ﷺ) as saying: If anyone pursues a path in search of knowledge, Allaah will thereby make easy for him a path to paradise; and he who is made slow by his actions will not be speeded by his genealogy.

[Sunan Abi Dawud 3643]

Ali bn Abu Talib (رضي الله عنه), once said, “I would be slave of a person who teaches me a letter”
[At-Tabaraan in Al-Mu’jam Al-Kabeer]

Accentuating the importance of knowledge.

Our beloved Messenger of Allaah (ﷺ) warned that “if we knew what he knows, we will cry more and smile little”.

[Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 2359]

But SubhanAllah, today we don’t even smile little, we rather laugh more as if we don’t know death or we are promised Al-Jannah! laughing with mouth and teeth showing in a dislike act in Islam.

REFLECT AND PONDER

May Allaah make us of those who beseek knowlege of the deen and act upon it, may He have mercy on our ignorance and safe us from humiliation in dunya and aakhira.
