EPISODE 1️⃣: INTRODUCTION

Pride (Arabic: ‘Ujb), Al-Ghazaali (رحمه الله) defined it as follows in Ihayaa’ ‘Uloom Ad-Deen, “It is to praise and show off the blessings that one has and to take them for granted while forgetting to ascribe them to Allaah, the Bestower of all Blessings…”

As for arrogance (Arabic: Kibr), it was described by the Prophet (ﷺ) as rejecting the truth and belittling people.

Rejecting the truth means denying and repelling it, deeming oneself far above it; and ‘belittling people’ means despising them.

The external signs of pride include: expecting respect, rejecting advice and knowledge (feeling they already know it all), speaking harshly, becoming angry when instructed, and viewing other people as beasts.

Just like any other disease, one doesn’t need to experience all the symptoms to be diagnosed with pride.

From pride, many other negative traits such as arrogance, envy, and anger are born.

Pride leads to arrogance, hence, they’re used together and interchangeably.

Pride With Respect to Allaah and His Apostle:
The worst form of pride is the pride against the commandments of the Creator. Pride brings confusion in the religion of Allaah (ﷻ) and thus it corrupts the heart and prevents it from pondering over the verses of the Qur’an. Pride could make people disobedient towards the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) .

Pride Against Fellow Humans:
When pride finds its way into the heart of a Muslim, it swiftly affects the way he talks, acts and treats others. Hence, a proud person will start thinking that he or she is better than others because of his/her knowledge, status or lineage.

Allaah (ﷻ) dislikes prideful character, as it is one of the most evil deeds.

He (ﷻ) says in Surah Luqman (31:18)

And turn not your face away from men with pride..

Allaah (ﷻ) tells us to not turn our faces away from people when we speak to them or they to us, looking down on them in an arrogant fashion. Rather we should be gentle towards them.

nor walk in insolence through the earth.

He continues by telling us to not be boastful, arrogant, proud and stubborn, else, he will hate us, because..

Verily, Allaah likes not any arrogant boaster

That is one who shows off and admires himself, feeling that he is better than others.

He (ﷻ) says in Surah Al-Israa (17:37)

“And walk not on the earth with conceit and arrogance, verily, you can neither rend nor penetrate the earth and you will never reach the mountains in height.”

Allaah (ﷻ) forbids us to walk in a boastful manner or act proud, like arrogant oppressors, because we cannot penetrate the earth with our walking.

The Prophet (ﷺ) said :
…And beware of letting your lower garment trail below your ankles, for this is a kind of boasting, and Allaah does not like boasting.

May Allaah (ﷻ) purify our hearts from all evil.

To be continued
