﷽
The Life of This World
Allah ﷻ says
اعْلَمُوْا
Meaning Be sure.
Meaning have no doubt.
Meaning have all certainty.
_
That what?
ٱعْلَمُوٓا۟ أَنَّمَا ٱلْحَيَوٰةُ ٱلدُّنْيَا لَعِبٌۭ وَلَهْوٌۭ وَزِينَةٌۭ وَتَفَاخُرٌۢ بَيْنَكُمْ وَتَكَاثُرٌۭ فِى ٱلْأَمْوَٰلِ وَٱلْأَوْلَٰدِ ۖ
Know that the life of this world is but amusement and diversion and adornment and boasting to one another and competition in increase of wealth and children –
كَمَثَلِ غَيْثٍ أَعْجَبَ ٱلْكُفَّارَ نَبَاتُهُۥ ثُمَّ يَهِيجُ فَتَرَىٰهُ مُصْفَرًّۭا ثُمَّ يَكُونُ حُطَٰمًۭا ۖ وَفِى ٱلْءَاخِرَةِ عَذَابٌۭ شَدِيدٌۭ وَمَغْفِرَةٌۭ مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ وَرِضْوَٰنٌۭ ۚ وَمَا ٱلْحَيَوٰةُ ٱلدُّنْيَآ إِلَّا مَتَٰعُ ٱلْغُرُورِ
like the example of a rain whose [resulting] plant growth pleases the tillers; then it dries and you see it turned yellow; then it becomes [scattered] debris. And in the Hereafter is severe punishment and forgiveness from Allah and approval. And what is the worldly life except the enjoyment of delusion.
[57:20]
_
And this is like when Allah ﷻ says:
أَلْهَىٰكُمُ ٱلتَّكَاثُرُ
The Multiplication (of wealth) distracts you
Meaning all of those things that you pursue in the Dunya is merely temporary distraction and enjoyment.
حَتَّىٰ زُرْتُمُ ٱلْمَقَابِرَ
Until you visit the graves.
[102:1-2]
Meaning, you will be able to break the distraction of the Dunya when you visit the graves as it is a reminder for us all.
And it will stop you from pursuing the Dunya any further when you die as you will visit it and stay there till Qiyamah, either in bliss or in punishment according to your deeds.
_
And Allah ﷻ says:
وَمَا ٱلْحَيَوٰةُ ٱلدُّنْيَآ إِلَّا مَتَٰعُ ٱلْغُرُورِ
And what is this world except a deceiving enjoyment?
[57:20]
Meaning, this life is only a form of enjoyment that deceives those who incline to it. Those who incline to this life will admire it and feel that it is dear to them, so much so, that they might think that this is the only life, no life or dwelling after it. Yet, in reality, this life is insignificant compared to the Hereafter.
_
And that is why Allah ﷻ says after describing an aspect of Jannah in Surah Mutaffifin
وَفِى ذَٰلِكَ فَلْيَتَنَافَسِ ٱلْمُتَنَٰفِسُونَ
And for that let the aspirers aspire.
[83:26]
_
And also in another place after describing bliss
لِمِثْلِ هَٰذَا فَلْيَعْمَلِ ٱلْعَٰمِلُونَ
And for the like of this let the workers work.
[37:61]
_
And finally for what?
Allah ﷻ clarifies
سَابِقُوٓا۟ إِلَىٰ مَغْفِرَةٍۢ مِّن رَّبِّكُمْ وَجَنَّةٍ عَرْضُهَا كَعَرْضِ ٱلسَّمَآءِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ
Race with one another in hastening towards forgiveness from your Lord, and Paradise the width whereof is as the width of the heaven and the earth
[57:21]
_
Ya Ibn Adam! Know Allah ﷻ has ordered toil and labour for Al Akhirah, so have Yaqeen in your sacrifice of this Dunya.
_
May Allah ﷻ ease our affairs and forgive our shortcomings.
آمِيْن يَارَبَّ الْعَالَمِينْ
