Permissible Or Not?

“Who are you to judge?”

This statement with many of its kinds are all too common nowadays, but have we ever asked ourselves if they are actually correct?

A man said to Rasūlullāh (ﷺ): He (ﷺ) replied: “If you hear your neighbours saying that you have done well, then you have done well, and if you hear them saying that you have done something bad, then you have done something bad.”

(Sunan ibn Mājah, hadith 4223)

So, if more than one person tells you you’re doing something wrong, you probably are.

As for telling others to mind their business, Rasūlullāh (ﷺ) said : “I swear by Allāh, you must enjoin what is good and prohibit what is evil, prevent the wrongdoer, bend him into conformity with what is right, and restrict him to what is right”

(Sunan Abū Dāwūd, hadith 4336)

So, when others transgress the boundary of Sharīʿah, it is our business. As believers we should want the best for others. It is our responsibility towards them, as well as those who may be following them, to stop them from evil.

It’s true that no one knows what is in another’s heart. But what if you deny your wrongdoings just because you don’t want to be told the truth? That’s a major problem with many of us today, and that’s a huge telltale of arrogance.
The Prophet (ﷺ) described arrogance as rejecting the truth and belittling people.

Rasūlullāh (ﷺ) also warns us of having such an attitude saying: “The most hated speech to Allāh is when a man says to another man, ‘Fear Allāh!’ and he replies, ‘Worry about your own self!’”

(Shuʿab al- Īmān, hadith 621)

But, the fault is on who it is. If we chastise people as a way of condemnation, they will most likely be defensive of their actions. Your responsibility is to correct, not to just pass judgment.

Allaah (ﷻ) commanded Musa (عليه السلام) to speak to one of the worst people to ever walk the earth “… mildly; perchance he may take warning or fear (Allaah).”

(Taha 20:44)

Allaah (ﷻ) says, commanding the Prophet (ﷺ) about the hypocrites:

أُو۟لَٰئِكَ ٱلَّذِينَ يَعْلَمُ ٱللَّهُ مَا فِى قُلُوبِهِمْ فَأَعْرِضْ عَنْهُمْ وَعِظْهُمْ وَقُل لَّهُمْ فِىٓ أَنفُسِهِمْ قَوْلًۢا بَلِيغًا

Those are the ones of whom Allaah knows what is in their hearts, so turn away from them but admonish them, and speak to them a word to reach their very souls.

(An-Nisaa’ 4:63)

May Allaah (ﷻ) guide us to that which is right.
آمين يا رب العالمين
