EPISODE 3️⃣5️⃣ – OTHER DOMES OF AL-AQSA – Part C
4️⃣ Dome of al-Khidr
🕌 The Dome of al-Khidr is a small hexagonal dome built in the 16th Century CE (10th century AH) on the far north-western corner of the Dome of the Rock Plateau.
🕌 This structure marks the spot where some Muslims believe a righteous man, Al-Khidr (عليه السلام), used to pray to Allaah (ﷻ).
🕌 He is mentioned in the holy Qur’an Surat Al-Kahf ayah 65-82.
🕌 However, it should be noted that there are no authentic sources to back the above claim. And Allaah (ﷻ) knows best.
🕌 The dome is based on six marble columns and includes a niche built with a red stone inside.
5️⃣ Dome of the Spirits (قبة روح)
🕌 Located north-west of the Dome of the Rock and opposite of the Bab al-Rahmah.
🕌 It was probably built during the Umayyad period because Ibn al-Faqih al-Hamadani (3-4H/9-10th century) in his Mukhtasar Kitab al-Buldan mentioned that there was a dome in the al-Aqsa enclave called Kubbat Jibril (Dome of Gabriel). Then it was called Kubbat al-Ruh and Kubbat al-Arvah (Dome of the Spirits). It was probably rebuilt during the 10th-century AH/16th century AC during the Ottoman period.
🕌 Several theories exist concerning the name of this building.
▪️It was called the Dome of the Spirits because of its close location to a cave called the “Spirits Cave”.
▪️According to another tradition, the souls of the dead will be gathered there for prayers.
▪️Its other name, the Dome of Tablets, comes from the tablets of the Stone, allegedly kept in the Ark of the Covenant in Biblical tradition.
🕌 It is a small octagonal dome that is based on eight marble columns attached to eight arches carrying the dome’s drum.
