EPISODE 4⃣: ETHICS OF DRINKING

1️⃣ Start with Basmalah, like when eating.

2️⃣ Drink with the right hand, like when eating.

3️⃣ Drink while sitting.

While there have been several narrations that show the Prophet (ﷺ) drinking while standing, scholars have maintained that it is best to drink while sitting, due to the saying of the Prophet (ﷺ):

“None of you should drink standing; and if any one forgets, he must vomit.”
(Muslim).

4⃣ Drink in 3 gulps, separating them each by a breath outside of the drinking vessel.

“Do not drink in one gulp like a camel, but in two or three (gulps). Mention the Name of Allaah (i.e., say Bismillaah) when you start drinking and praise Him (i.e., say Al-hamdu lillaah) after you have finished (drinking).”
(At- Tirmidhi, 1885)

5️⃣ Do not blow into the drink.

It was narrated:
The Messenger of Allaah (ﷺ) prohibited us from blowing in the drinking water. A man said: “O Messenger of Allaah! Sometimes I see some litter floating about on the surface. What should I do then?” He (ﷺ) replied, “Pour them out.” Then the man said: “My thirst is not quenched with one draught.” Messenger of Allaah (ﷺ) said, “Then put away the cup from your mouth (in between three gulps), and take a breath.”
(At-Tirmidhi, 1887)

Also, blowing into drinks (and even food) is a dirty attitude as saliva from the person’s mouth can unintentionally be blown into the water.

6️⃣ Don’t drink directly from the container of the drink.

The Messenger of Allaah (ﷺ) prohibited drinking directly out of the mouth of a water-skin.
(Al-Bukhari and Muslim)

Another narration.

The Messenger of Allaah (ﷺ) forbade turning the water-skin upside down and drinking directly from its mouth.
(Al-Bukhari and Muslim)

7⃣ If in a group, the drink should be passed from the right.

The Prophet (ﷺ) said:
…The right, then the right.”
(Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1893)

The Prophet (ﷺ) also said:
“One who is on the right has preference, then again the one who is on the right.”
(Al-Bukhari and Muslim)

8⃣ The one providing the drink for people should be the last one to drink.

The Prophet (ﷺ) said:
“The one providing water for people is the last of them to drink.”
(Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1894)

9⃣ Do not drink from golden or silver vessels.

It was narrated:
“…but I heard the Prophet (ﷺ) saying, “Do not wear silk or dibaja, and do not drink in silver or golden vessels, and do not eat in plates of such metals, for such things are for the unbelievers in this worldly life and for us in the Hereafter.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari 5426)

A narration in Muslim is: The Messenger of Allaah (ﷺ) said, “Surely, he who eats or drinks in gold and silver vessels fills his belly with Hell-fire.”

🔟 Praise Allaah after drinking.

The Prophet (ﷺ) said:
“Indeed Allaah is pleased with the slave who, upon eating his food or drinking his drink, he praises Him for it.”
(Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1816)

May Allaah guide us to that which brings us closer to Him.

آمِيْن يَارَبَّ الْعَالَمِينْ
