EPISODE 2️⃣: THE GRAVITY OF THE ISSUE
If the ummah fails to do its duty of enjoining what is good and forbidding what is evil, wrongdoing and corruption will spread throughout the ummah, and it will attract the curse and punishment of Allaah.
Allaah warns His believing servants of a fitnah that will not be restricted to the sinners and evildoers. Rather, it will reach the others if sins are not stopped and prevented.
And fear a trial which will not strike those who have wronged among you exclusively, and know that Allah is severe in penalty.
(Al-Anfal 8:25)
Allaah commanded the believers to stop evil from flourishing among them, so that He does not encompass them all in the torment.
The warning in this Ayah addresses the Companions of the Prophet and all others, even though the speech in the Ayah was directed at the Companions.
The Messenger of Allaah (ﷺ) spoke on the importance of enjoining good and the implications of not doing so in different Prophetic traditions:
By He in Whose Hand is my soul! You will enjoin righteousness and forbid evil, or Allaah will send a punishment upon you from Him; you will supplicate then to Him, but He will not answer your supplication. We
(Ahmad – Tafseer Ibn Katheer, Al-Anfal 8:26)
If sins become apparent in my Ummah, Allaah will surround them with punishment from Him. He was asked, O Allaah’s Messenger! Will they have righteous people among them then?” He replied, Yes. He was asked, “What will happen to them?” He said, “They will be stricken as the people, but they will end up with Allaah’s forgiveness and pleasure.”
(Ahmad – Tafseer Ibn Katheer, Al-Anfal 8:26)
“Every people among whom sins are being committed, while they are mightier and more numerous than those who do wrong, yet they did nothing to stop them, then Allah will surround them all with punishment.”
(Ahmad – Tafseer Ibn Katheer, Al-Anfal 8:26)
The Messenger of Allaah ﷺ said: “The first defect (in religion) which affected the Children of Israel is the way that man would meet another and say to him: fear Allaah and abstain from what you are doing, for this is not lawful for you.’ Then he would meet him the next day and find no change in him, but this would not prevent him from eating with him, drinking with him and sitting in his assemblies. When it came to this, Allaah led their hearts into evil ways on account of their association with others.”
Then He (ﷺ) continued: “Nay, by Allah, you either enjoin good and forbid evil and catch hold of the hand of the oppressor and persuade him to act justly and stick to the truth, or, Allah will involve the hearts of some of you with the hearts of others and will curse you as he had cursed them.
(Sunan Abu Dawud, Chapter 17, Hadith No. 4338)
Enjoining what is good and forbidding what is evil is a mission which will never end until the Hour begins. It is obligatory upon the entire ummah, rulers and subjects, men and women, each according to his or her circumstances.
May Allaah grant us the ability to do what is right.
