On the authority of Thawbaan رضي الله عنه, the Prophet ﷺ said:
“I certainly know people of my nation who will come on the Day of Resurrection with white good deeds like the mountains of Tihamah, but Allah will make them like scattered dust.” Thawban said: “O Messenger of Allah, describe them to us and tell us more, so that we will not become of them unknowingly.” He ﷺ said: “They are your brothers and from your race, worshipping at night as you do, but they will be people who, when they are alone, transgress the sacred limits of Allah.”
[Sunan Ibn Mājah 4245, Grade: Sahih (authentic) according to Al-Albani]

A Hadith that shakes the heart.
Wallahi!
Dying in heedlessness without Tawbah with sins that we secluded ourselves with, hiding away from the creation, whilst regarding the creator as a insignificant onlooker as we transgress his limits can result in our good deeds being destroyed.

As Allah ﷻ says
وَقَدِمْنَآ إِلَىٰ مَا عَمِلُوا۟ مِنْ عَمَلٍۢ فَجَعَلْنَٰهُ هَبَآءًۭ مَّنثُورًا
And We will regard what they have done of deeds and make them as scattered dust.
[25:23]
هَبَآءًۭ مَّنثُورًا
Refers to the dust particles you see in sun rays when it shines through a gap.

It reminds me of some verses of poetry,
يا ناصع الثوب و القلب أسود
Oh you, with a pure white thobe whilst your heart is black,
ما هذا الأمل ولست بمخلّد
What is this excessive hope, when you have not been made immortal in Jannah?
أما تخاف من أوعد وتهدد؟
Do you not fear the one who has threatened you with a promise?

That’s why we should all be in the habit of making this Du’a ,
On the authority of Al Asma’i, When Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه would be praised, he would say
اللَّهمّ اجْعَلْنِي خَيْرًا مِمَّا يَظُنُّونَ، وَاغْفِرْ لِي مَا لا يَعْلَمُونَ، وَلا تُؤَاخِذْنِي بِمَا يَقُولُونَ
[الأدب المفرد]
O Allah! Let me better than I think I am, forgive me for what they do not know, and do not hold me accountable for what they say’.

May Allah ﷻ protect us from such fitna and make us among those who are conscious of Allah ﷻ even when we are alone.
