Do you want to be in Jannah where Allah ﷻ says:

خَٰلِدِينَ فِيهَآ أَبَدًا

They shall reside in it forever.
[72:23]

Then have Istiqamah!
Means being steadfast upon the obedience of Allah ﷻ.

In a hadith narrated by Sufyan ibn Abdillah رضي الله عنه he once said to Prophet ﷺ “O Messenger of Allah, tell me a statement about Islam such that I will not have to ask anyone other than you”. He answered,

قُلْ آمَنْتُ بِاللَّهِ فَاسْتَقِمْ

“Say, I believe in Allah and then stand firm and steadfast to that.”
[Sahih Muslim 38]

This hadith revolves around two fundamental principles:

Aqeedah (Creed) as it talks about “Believing in Allah”

Ibadah (Worship) as the hadith says “stand firm and steadfast”

This hadith is important as the main components of Imaan (statement of the tongue, belief in the heart & action of the limbs) are found and summarised in this hadith.

Statement of the tongue: “Say”

Belief in the heart: “I believe”

Actions of the limbs: “stand firm and be steadfast”

What is Istiqamah?!
Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه said “That you don’t affiliate companions with Allah.”

Uthman Ibn Affan رضي الله عنه said “To have ikhlas to Allah solely in doing actions .”

Umar Ibn Khattab رضي الله عنه said “It’s that try to be steadfast on the issues which might be obligated, and to desert the prohibitions.”

Allah ﷻ says in the Qur’an:

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ قَالُواْ رَبُّنَا ٱللَّهُ ثُمَّ ٱسۡتَقَٰمُواْ تَتَنَزَّلُ عَلَيۡهِمُ ٱلۡمَلَٰٓئِكَةُ أَلَّا تَخَافُواْ وَلَا تَحۡزَنُواْ وَأَبۡشِرُواْ بِٱلۡجَنَّةِ ٱلَّتِي كُنتُمۡ تُوعَدُونَ

Indeed, those who have said, “Our Lord is Allah ” and then remained on a right course – the angels will descend upon them, [saying], “Do not fear and do not grieve but receive good tidings of Paradise, which you were promised.
[41:30]

Istiqamah, is not easy, except with the permission of Allah ﷻ.
_
But we must all strive to be steadfast to hold on to this hot coal, which is Islam.
Especially in this time of Fitan and Calamity,
And the reward is with Allah ﷻ!
_
And to be firm upon Tawheed is a part of Istiqamah, and that means staying away from Shirk, even Hidden Shirk as the Prophet ﷺ clarified as Showing off!

That is why Ikhlaas is also a part of Istiqamah,
That you don’t seek the approval of men instead of the approval of Allah ﷻ.
_
And to act upon obedience and to avoid disobedience!
This is Istiqamah also!
To make sure we are cautious of every action and to be consistent upon goodness and to be distant from evil!
_
May Allah ﷻ make us among those who believe and remain steadfast.
