🕌 47. Knowing that Allaah (ﷻ) is Watching His Slave when He Prays
Bearing in mind the Greatness of Allaah (ﷻ), when he is standing before Him in prayer. Bearing in mind the fact that Allaah (ﷻ) can see him and is watching him as he prays.
… Then he (the man) said, “Inform me about Ihsan.” He (ﷺ) answered, “It is that you should serve Allaah (ﷻ) as though you could see Him, for though you cannot see Him yet He sees you.”
[40 Hadith Nawawi. Also Sahih Muslim (from the narration of Umar ibn Khaatab (رضي الله عنه) about the visit of Angel Jibril (عليه السلام)].
Ibn Rajab comments on this tradition, saying: The explanation of excellence in the Prophet’s (ﷺ) saying that you worship Allaah (ﷻ) as if you see Him indicates that the servant worships Allaah (ﷻ) in this manner, which is consciousness of His immanence and that he is in front of Him as if he sees Him. This requires reverence, fear, veneration, and glorification… and also requires sincerity in worship and the effort to make it excellent, complete, and perfect.
[Jāmi’ al-‘Ulūm wal-Ḥikam 2].

🕌 48. Not Stealing Prayer
Yahya related to me from Malik from Yahya ibn Said from an-Numan ibn Murra (رضي الله عنه) that the Messenger of Allaah (ﷺ) , said, “What about drunkenness, stealing and adultery?” (That was before anything had been revealed about them.) They said, “Allaah and His Messenger know best.” He said, “They are excesses and in them is a punishment. And the worst of thieves is the one who steals his prayer.” They said, “How does he steal his prayer, Messenger of Allaah?” He replied, “He does not do ruku or sajda properly.”
[Muwatta Book 9, Hadith 75].
Abu Huraira (رضي الله عنه) reported: The Messenger of Allaah (ﷺ) entered the Masjid and a person also entered therein and offered prayer, and then came and paid salutation to the Messenger of Allaah (ﷺ). The Messenger of Allaah (ﷺ) returned his salutation and said: ”Go back and pray, for you have not offered the prayer.” He again prayed as he had prayed before, and came to the Messenger of Allaah (ﷺ) and saluted him. The Messenger of Allaah (ﷺ) returned the salutation and said: ”Go back and say prayer, for you have not offered the prayer.” This act was repeated three times. Upon this, the person said: ”By Him Who has sent you with Truth, whatever better I can do than this, please teach me.” The Prophet (ﷺ) said: ”When you get up to pray, recite takbir, and then recite whatever you conveniently can from the Qur’an, then bow down and remain quietly in that position, then raise your- self and stand erect; then prostrate yourself and remain quietly in that attitude; then raise yourself and sit quietly; and do that throughout all your prayers.”
[Sahih Muslim 397 a].
Narrated Zaid bin Wahb (رضي الله عنه), Hudhaifa (رضي الله عنه) saw a person who was not performing the bowing and prostration perfectly. He said to him, “You have not prayed and if you should die you would die on a religion other than that of Muhammad.”
[Sahih al-Bukhari 791].
Watching people pray today, one will be amazed how many people indeed have been stealing from their prayer and for how many years they have been doing so.
May Allaah (ﷻ) help us perfect our prayers.
To be continued… إن شاء الله
