EPISODE 2️⃣: THE DANGERS OF PRIDE

The Prophet (ﷺ) said, emphasizing the danger of pride, “If you were not committing sins, I would fear for you what is more serious than that: pride, pride.”

[Al-Bayhaqi – Al-Albaani classified it as Hasan]

Pride ruins our relationships with Allaah (ﷻ) and with others. It makes one stagnant in knowledge as they refuse to believe there is something they do not know.

The most effective cure for pride is constant remembrance of the punishment it brings about.

Allaah (ﷻ) says:

قِيلَ ٱدْخُلُوٓا۟ أَبْوَٰبَ جَهَنَّمَ خَٰلِدِينَ فِيهَا ۖ فَبِئْسَ مَثْوَى ٱلْمُتَكَبِّرِينَ

“It shall be said: Enter the gates of hell to abide therein; so evil is the abode of the proud.”
(Az-Zumar 39:72)

The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “No one who has an atom’s-weight of arrogance in his heart will enter Paradise.”
(Narrated by Muslim, 91)

How big is an atom?

Or rather, how small is it? It’s extremely tiny.

Knowing the amount of pride that can hinder our entry into Jannah is something for us to ponder upon.

The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “Might is His garment and pride is His cloak; whoever seeks to compete with Me concerning them, I will punish him.”
(Muslim, 2620)

Al-Nawawi (رحمه الله) commented on this: This is how it is narrated in all texts. The pronoun in the words ‘His garment’ and ‘His cloak’ refers to Allaah, and there is something omitted; what is meant is ‘Allaah says, ‘whoever seeks to compete with Me concerning them, I will punish him’.

What is meant by ‘seeks to compete with Me’ is seeking to acquire that characteristic in the sense of sharing in it.

This is a stern warning against arrogance which clearly demonstrates that it is haraam.
(Sharh Muslim, 16/173)

The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “On the Day of Resurrection, the arrogant will be gathered like ants in the form of men. Humiliation will overwhelm them from all sides. They will be driven to a prison in Hell called Bawlas, with the hottest fire rising over them, and they will be given to drink of the juice of the inhabitants of Hell, which is teenat al-khabaal.”
(Narrated by al-Tirmidhi, 2492)

Pride leads to destruction (Al-Bazzaar and Al-Bayhaqi)

The Prophet (ﷺ) said : There are three people to whom Allaah will not speak on the Day of Resurrection, nor will He purify them, nor will He look at them, and they will have an agonizing punishment: an old man who commits adultery, a king who lies, and an arrogant dependent.”
(Sahih Muslim 107)

Also, we should always remember that:

📍 Whatever we have is from Allaah and He can take it back the same way He gave it to us.

📍 Whatever we have is by the mercy of Allaah and not by our might or power.

📍 We do not really receive any special treatment from our life to death;

📍 We are all created from a despised fluid.

📍 We all came into this world through an exit for waste.

📍 We are just vessels of feces throughout our lives.

📍 None of us gets a special angel to deliver our provisions or to take our souls.

📍 Our final clothes will be plain white clothes.

📍 Our final destination is 6-feet under.

📍 No matter how perfumed our bodies are before being buried, a day will definitely come that they will decay and be devoured by insects.

We all seek refuge in Allaah from this dangerous disease of the heart.
