PART A – CHARITY DOES NOT DECREASE WEALTH
مَّن ذَا ٱلَّذِی یُقۡرِضُ ٱللَّهَ قَرۡضًا حَسَنࣰا فَیُضَـٰعِفَهُۥ لَهُۥۤ أَضۡعَافࣰا كَثِیرَةࣰۚ…
Who is he that will lend to Allaah a goodly loan so that He may multiply it to him many times?…
[Surah Baqarah Ayah 245]
Who is he who put a limit, when Allaah (ﷻ) has ordained that He will repay in multitudes!
In a world of competition of material success, everyone wants to accumulate more and only a few are not hesitant to give.
عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ “مَا نَقَصَتْ صَدَقَةٌ مِنْ مَالٍ وَمَا زَادَ اللَّهُ عَبْدًا بِعَفْوٍ إِلاَّ عِزًّا وَمَا تَوَاضَعَ أَحَدٌ لِلَّهِ إِلاَّ رَفَعَهُ اللَّهُ”.
Abu Huraira (رضي الله عنه) reported Allaah’s Messenger (ﷺ) as saying:
Charity does not in any way decrease the wealth…
[Sahih Muslim 2588]
It is normal for one to want to fulfil his own personal needs before giving to the outside but don’t be miserly and give because it is Allaah (ﷻ) who gives to whomever He wishes. And He gives without measure.
Beware of giving that which you wouldn’t want to keep yourself and be intentional in giving that which is good for Allaah’s (ﷻ) sake.
O you who have believed, spend from the good things which you have earned and from that which We have produced for you from the earth. And do not aim toward the defective therefrom, spending [from that] while you would not take it [yourself] except with closed eyes. And know that Allaah is free of need and praiseworthy…
[Surah Baqarah Ayah 267]
Are you scared that your charity will make you decrease your wealth or become poor?
This belief and orientation is from the Shaytan… (we seek Allaah’s refuge)
Satan threatens you with poverty and orders you to immorality, while Allaah promises you forgiveness from Him and bounty. And Allaah is all-Encompassing and Knowing…
[Surah Baqarah Ayah 268]
We should bear in mind that whatever we give out for Allaah’s (ﷻ) sake is for our own benefit in the long run. By Allaah (ﷻ), we are more in need of Allaah’s mercy and barakah than any amount of wealth!
So, don’t be hesitant the next time you have the means to help someone in need or perform any other form of charity.
The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allaah is like a seed [of grain] which grows seven spikes; in each spike is a hundred grains. And Allaah multiplies [His reward] for whom He wills. And Allaah is all-Encompassing and Knowing…
[Surah Baqarah Ayah 261]
And the example of those who spend their wealth seeking means to the approval of Allaah and assuring [reward for] themselves is like a garden on high ground which is hit by a downpour – so it yields it fruits in double. And [even] if it is not hit by a downpour, then a drizzle [is enough]. And Allaah, of what you do, is Seeing…
[Surah Baqarah Ayah 265]
Subhanallah! Look at the parable that Allaah sets for those who give solely to please Allaah (ﷻ).
Umar bn Khattab (رضي الله عنه) narrates; The Messenger of Allaah (ﷺ), ordered us to give charity and at the time I possessed some wealth. I said to myself, “Today I will out do Abu Bakr (رضي الله عنه), if ever there were a day to out do him.” I went with half of my wealth to the Prophet (ﷺ). Allaah’s Apostle (ﷺ) said, “What have you left for your family?” I said, “The same amount.” Then, Abu Bakr came with everything he had. The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “O Abu Bakr, what have you left for your family?” Abu Bakr said, “Allaah and His messenger.” Then I said, “By Allaah, I will never do better than Abu Bakr.”
[Sunan al-Tirmidhī 3675]
This was the attitude of our models (رضي الله عنهم) towards giving for Allaah’s (ﷻ) sake.
May Allaah (ﷻ) make it easy for us to give for His sake. Ameen
