SHIELD AGAINST THE EVIL EYE (AL-‘AYN)

MORAL SHIELD
Allāh (ﷻ) said:
يَٰأَيُّهَا ٱلنَّبِىُّ قُل لِّأَزۡوَٰجِكَ وَبَنَاتِكَ وَنِسَآءِ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِينَ يُدۡنِينَ عَلَيۡهِنَّ مِن جَلَٰبِيبِهِنَّ ذَٰلِكَ أَدۡنَىٰٓ أَن يُعۡرَفۡنَ فَلَا يُؤۡذَيۡنَۗ وَكَانَ ٱللَّهُ غَفُورًا رَّحِيمًا
O Prophet, tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to bring down over themselves [part] of their outer garments. That is more suitable that they will be known and not be abused. And ever is Allāh Forgiving and Merciful.
(Al-Ahzab 33:59)
Wearing the proper hijab is compulsory upon the Muslim woman. So, protect yourself from the evil eye by covering up in the Islamic way.

AR-RUQYA
It was narrated that ‘Aisha (رضي الله عنها) said: “The Messenger of Allāh (ﷺ) commanded me, or he commanded (the people) to use ruqyah to deal with the evil eye.”
(Narrated by al-Bukhari, al-Tibb, 5297)
The duas in the recitation of ruqya are indeed a protection against the evil eye. There are many such duas from the Glorious Qur’ān and sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), among which are:
💠 The al-Mu’awwidhatayn
The last two surahs of the Holy Qur’an, Al-Falaq and An-Nas, along with Al-Ikhlas are some of our best protections against the evil eye and any evil that can befall a person. The Prophet (ﷺ) taught his companions to recite these three chapters of the Qur’ān thrice every morning and evening, saying that it will suffice us in all aspects of our lives.
💠 Surah al-Fatihah
Surah al-Fatihah is a cure for many ailments, and that is why it is also called ‘Surah ar-Ruqya’. Evidence of this could be found in the hadith narrated by Abu Sa`id Al-Khudri (رضي الله عنه) in Sahih al-Bukhari 5736.
💠 The Prayer of Ibraheem (عليه السلام)
أَعُوذُ بِكَلِمَاتِ اللَّهِ التَّامَّةِ مِنْ كُلِّ شَيْطَانٍ وَهَامَّةٍ وَمِنْ كُلِّ عَيْنٍ لاَمَّةٍ
(I seek refuge for you both in the Perfect Words of Allāh, from every devil and every poisonous reptile, and from every evil eye)”.
(Sahih al-Bukhari 3371)
This was the dua that Prophet Ibraheem (عليه السلام) used to make for his sons, and also that which Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) used to make for his grandchildren, Hassan and Hussein (رضي الله عنهام).
This is a dua against evil eye especially for children, and for Muslim parents and caregivers, we should endeavour to recite this dua for the children every day even if they are old enough to recite other duas against the evil eye by themselves.
💠 The Dua of Jibril (عليه السلام)
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ أَرْقِيكَ مِنْ كُلِّ شَىْءٍ يُؤْذِيكَ مِنْ شَرِّ كُلِّ نَفْسٍ أَوْ عَيْنٍ أَوْ حَاسِدٍ اللَّهُ يَشْفِيكَ بِسْمِ اللَّهِ أَرْقِيكَ
(In the Name of Allāh I perform Ruqyah for you, from everything that is harming you, from the evil of every soul or envious eye, may Allāh heal you. In the Name of Allāh I perform Ruqyah for you)”.
(Sahih Muslim 2186)
This is a prayer that Jibril (عليه السلام) performed on Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) when he was ill. This shows that this prayer may be more of a healing for the evil eye, and not necessarily a protection against it.
💠 Other Surah of the Qur’ān
Allaah (ﷻ) said:
وَنُنَزِّلُ مِنَ ٱلۡقُرۡءَانِ مَا هُوَ شِفَآءٞ وَرَحۡمَةٞ لِّلۡمُؤۡمِنِينَ…
And We send down of the Qur’an that which is healing and mercy for the believers,…
[Al-Isrâ’ 17:82]

ADHKAR
Engaging in a lot of adhkar is a solid way of preventing oneself from al-‘ayn.
There are several azkar as thought in the Sunnah of our Nabiy (ﷺ) that could help repel the evil of the evil eye. Let’s endeavour to learn them, memorise them and say them as often as possible.
May Allaah (ﷻ) keep us safe from the evils of men and jin.
