During his Khilafah, Umar رضي الله عنه visited Damascus, Abu Darda رضي الله عنه lived there and served there as a Qadi.

On entering Abu Ad Darda’s home, he entered through a door which had no lock, the house itself was dark.
When Abu Ad Darda heard him come in, he got up and welcomed him and sat him down.

Umar رضي الله عنه felt around in the darkness and found there was a Saddle for a pillow, a few pebbles laid out and a thin sheet which he thought was unable to fight any cold!

So Umar رضي الله عنه asked “Ya Abu Ad Darda May Allah bless you, Did I not send to you items of provisions and comfort?” Abu Ad Darda رضي الله عنه replied “Didn’t the Prophet ﷺ say “Let the provisions for anyone of you in this world be like that of a riders?”
“What have we done after him Ya Umar?” Umar رضي الله عنه wept and both men wept till Fajr.

After this, Months passed and Abu Ad Darda رضي الله عنه passed away, and Awf ibn Malik رضي الله عنه narrated a dream.
He رضي الله عنه said “I saw a green wide field abundant in growth and riches, and a great leather dome in the middle, where goats that I had not seen the like of before surrounded it. I asked “Whom is this all for?” I was told “It is for Abdur Rahman ibn Awf”
Soon after Abdur Rahman ibn Awf came out and said “Ya Ibn Malik! This is what Allah gave us because of the Qur’an! And if you were to go beyond that peak, you would find the likes of which the eye has never seen, the ear has never heard, the heart never perceived… All of which is for Abu Ad Darda! Because he used to push away this worldly life with his hands and his chest!

Is this not proof of Allah’s promise to the Mu’mineen?
Sacrifice this Dunya with all your ability and the Akhirah is opened for you!
But we have strayed from this, and we have allowed Al Wahn to enter our hearts, we love this Dunya and dislike to meet Allah.

How ashamed would you feel, if Muhammad ﷺ saw the affairs of the muslims today? Where some are humiliated with luxury and freedom, but others are humiliated with poverty and oppression?
