EPISODE 2️⃣: SEEKING PROTECTION FROM EVIL USING TALISMANS, CHARMS AND AMULETS.

The act of writing supplications, the beautiful names of Allāh (ﷻ), or verses from the Qur’ān on clothes or pieces of papers or branding them on metals, and then placing them on the body in the forms of bracelets, necklaces, bands, pouches, rings or in houses, has not been reported through any authentic narrations from the Prophet (ﷺ) or from his companions. And they never practiced it.

As Muslims, we know that the best religious example to be followed is the Prophet (ﷺ) himself, and his companions. If the Prophet (ﷺ) and his companions did not use charms and amulets as a means of protection and warding off evil, then we as Muslims should not use them either.

It was reported that the Prophet (ﷺ) said :
“If somebody innovates something which is not in harmony with the principles of our religion, that thing is rejected.”

(Sahih al-Bukhari 2697)

The Prophet (ﷺ) permitted invocations (ruqyah) to be recited upon a person who is afflicted with an illness, magic or evil eye. This is done by Qur’anic recitations and supplications. But the Prophet (ﷺ) never permitted the hanging of amulets on the body or in homes or workplaces.

Auf b. Malik Ashja’i reported: “We practised incantation in the pre-Islamic days and we said: “Allāh’s Messenger. what is your opinion about it?” He said: Let me know your incantation and said: There is no harm in the incantation which does not contain polytheism.”

(Muslim 2200)

The scholars are in agreement that ruqyah is permissible so long as they do not contain any element of shirk, and a person believes that ruqyah is a means that will only bring benefit by the permission and decree of Allāh (ﷻ). The Prophet (ﷺ) would seek refuge (protection) for his two grandsons, Hasan and Husayn (رضي الله عنهم), by saying :

“أعوذ بكلمات الله التامات من كل شيطان وهامة ومن كل عين لامة”

“I seek protection (for you) in the perfect words of Allāh, from every devil and every beast and from every envious blame-worthy eye”

(Bukhaari 3371)

Ruwaifi’ bin Thabit said:
“The Messenger of Allāh (ﷺ) said: ‘O Ruwaifi’, you may live for a long time after me, so tell the people that whoever ties up his beard, or twists it, or hangs an amulet, or cleans himself (after relieving himself) with animal dung or bones, Muhammad has nothing to do with him.'”

(Sunan an-Nasa’i 5067)

From this, it is clear that wearing of amulets is not from the guidance of Islām. Instead, these charms and amulets only increase a person in weakness spiritually, physically and mentally.
Allāh (ﷻ) alone will give you relief and protection. So turn to Him alone and seek His help, for He will surely ease your discomfort.

May Allaah (ﷻ) ease our affairs.
