Episode 3: Start With The Sunnah Rites
🔹 Circumcision
It was narrated from Abu Hurairah (رضي الله عنه) that the Messenger of Allaah (ﷺ) said:
“The Fitrah are five: Circumcision, removing the pubes, trimming the mustache, clipping the nails, and plucking the armpit hairs.”
(Al-Bukhaari, 5889 and Muslim, 257)
_
Fitrah in Islam means the natural pattern of the deen of Allaah (ﷻ) on which He has made mankind and urged them to follow for the advantage of mankind, as this will make them better and more perfect. Discussing some of the benefits of circumcision, Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen (رحمه الله) said:
…..It serves an interest which has to do with one of the conditions of prayer, namely purity (tahaarah), because if the foreskin remains, when the urine comes out of the urethra, some of it will collect there, and this causes burning and infection every time the person moves, and every time the foreskin is squeezed, some drops of urine come out, thus causing najaasah (impurity).
(Al-Sharh al-Mumti’, 1/133)
N.B
Circumcision of the genital is compulsory for a muslim male, for the female, it is mutahab. If a female child is going to be circumcise (in obedience to the sunnah), this should be done by a certified medical practitioner.

🔹 Shaving the Hair
Narrated Muhammad bin ‘Ali bin Al-Husain (رضي الله عنه)
That Ali bin Abi Talib (رضي الله عنه) said: “The Messenger of Allaah (ﷺ) had the ‘Aqiqah for Al-Hasan with one sheep, and said: ‘O Fatimah! Shave his head and give the weight of his hair in silver as charity.'” He said: “So I weighed it, and it was the weight of a Dirham or a bit of a Dirham.”
(Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1519. Hassan Darussalam)
If weighing the hair becomes too stressful, it is enough to estimate the weight of the hair and give out paper currency equivalent to the price of that amount of gold or silver. After shaving the hair, saffron (a kind of oil-base perfume) should be rubbed on the head of the baby.
Narrated Buraydah ibn al-Hasib (رضي الله عنه)
When a boy was born to one of us in the pre-Islamic period, we sacrificed a sheep and smeared his head with its blood; but when Allaah brought Islam, we sacrificed a sheep, shaved his head and smeared his head with saffron.
(Sunan Abi Dawud 2843. Graded Hasan by Al-Albani)
N.B
It is encouraged on the parent who wants to do the aqeeqah to invite, family friends, neighbors, and well-wishers on the day of the aqeeqah to celebrate Allaah’s (ﷻ) blessings by giving out food and the meat from the animal that has been sacrificed, as well as staying away from Haram activities such as music and free mixing of men and women.
May Allaah (ﷻ) grant our children blessings in their lives, and may we benefit from the care we give to them in this world and the hereafter.
