THE EVIL OF FABRICATED HADITH, ITS TREND ON SOCIAL MEDIA AND ITS DANGER TO THE UMMAH

EPISODE 3️: The Understanding of the Sahaba Regarding Fabrication of Hadith

Many among the Sahabas رضي الله عنه wished to narrate many hadith from the Prophet ﷺ despite them being truthful, but due to fear of adding or omitting any wordings, many of them refrained from narrating too much as it is understood from the following hadith.

Abdullaah ibn Zubayr رضي الله عنه said to his father, “I do not hear you relating Hadith from Rasulullah ﷺ just as I hear so-and-so relating Hadith.”Zubayr رضي الله عنه replied, “I was always with him, but I heard him say, “Whoever falsely attributes a Hadith to me should prepare his abode in Jahannam.’”

Anas bin Mālik رضي الله عنه reported: ”Indeed what prevents me from relating to you a great number of Ḥadīth is that the Messenger of Allaah ﷺ said: ‘Whoever intends to lie upon me, then let him take his seat in the Fire.’”
[Sahih Bukhari, Book 3, Hadith: 108; Sahih Muslim, Hadith No.3]

Nevertheless, the one who shares everything he sees argue “but I wasn’t the fabricator, I only shared what I received/see!”

Abī Hurayrah رضي الله عنه said, the Messenger of Allaah ﷺ, said: ‘It is enough of a lie for a man to narrate everything he hears’
*Sahih Muslim, Hadith No.8. Also narrated by Umar ibn Khatab رضي الله عنه in Hadith No.9]

He (the forwarder) further argues, “I didn’t know it was a lie on the Prophet ﷺ, I only shared because it makes sense”.

What steps did you take to find out the authenticity of the hadith quoted before you shared?

The Prophet ﷺ says “Whoever narrates a hadeeth from me that he thinks its false is one of the liars.”
[Sahih Muslim, Hadith No.1].

Ibn Wahb narrated to us, he said, Mālik said to me: ‘Know that a man who relates everything he hears is not safe, and he can never be an Imām, as long as he narrates everything he hears’.
[Sahih Muslim Hadith No.10]

Abd ar-Rahman bin Mahdī also said: ‘A man cannot be an Imām whose example is followed until he withholds from some of what he hears’ .
[Sahih Muslim Hadith No.12]

Scholars opinion on the above hadith

Ibn Hibbān said ‘everyone who doubts whether what he is relating is authentic or not is included in the apparent meaning of this Hadīth.’
[Kitāb al Du’āfâ]

Other opinions includes:

💠 whoever narrates a false hadith ignorantly is among the liars.

💠 a man may narrate from his sheikh, doubting the authenticity of the hadith and yet spread such hadith because his sheikh has narrated it. Such a man is among the liars.

💠 the one who narrates or broadcast a hadith (articles with such hadith) without knowing the source and the authenticity of the hadith are among the liars.

It is not taken as an excuse your ignorance about the authenticity of a hadith you shared to people. If you do not have the knowledge or the facilities to verify the authenticity of any particular hadith, it is enough for you to disregard the post/article regardless how much knowledge you think people might derive from it until you could verify the hadith. Because what is greater than all the beauty of the wordings and all the lessons is the evil of you being a partaker in attributing lies to the Prophet of Allaah ﷺ.
