Five Acts And Their Benefits
The beauty and sweetness of Islam is so immeasurable that almost every good deed done for the sake of Allaah (ﷻ) alone attracts many rewards, and benefits the believer both in this world and the hereafter.
The adhan is one of those deeds that attracts rewards for the believer if he responds to the mu’adhdhin solely to gain rewards from Allaah (ﷻ) during the call to prayer; just in less than ten minutes. As Muslims we should learn to apply any act recommended by the Prophet (ﷺ) in our daily lives.
These acts and their rewards are;
1️⃣ Repeating what the mu’adhdhin says, except when he says:
حَيَّ عَلَى الصَّلَّاة ، حَي عَلَى الْفَلَاح
come to prayer, come to salvation
then the response should be,
لَاحَوْلَ وَلَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِالله
there is no power and no might save with Allaah.
If the response comes from the heart, then he/she receives the glad tidings of Jannah.
[Narrated by Umar bin al-Khattab (رضي الله عنه) as recorded in Sahih Muslim 385]
2️⃣ After the adhan is complete, the following should be recited, and your sins will be forgiven (in’shaa’Allaah).
Sa’d bin Abu Waqqas (رضي الله عنه) reported that the Messenger of Allaah (ﷺ) said:
If anyone says on hearing the Mu’adhdhin:
وَأَنَا أَشْـهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلـهَ إِلاَّ اللّهُ وَحْـدَهُ لَا شَـرِيكَ لَـهُ وَأَنَّ محَمَّـداً عَبْـدُهُ وَرَسُـولُهُ، رَضِيـتُ بِاللّهِ رَبَّاً، وَبِمُحَمَّـدٍ رَسُـولاً، وَبِالإِسْلَامِ دِينـاً
“I testify that there is no god but Allaah alone. Who has no partner, and that Muhammad is His servant and His Messenger, (and that) I am satisfied with Allaah as my Lord, with Muhammad as Messenger. and with Islam as deen (code of life),”
…his sins would be forgiven.
(Sahih Muslim 386)
3️⃣ Invoking the blessings of Allaah (ﷻ) on the Prophet (ﷺ).
Abdullah b. Amr bin al-As (رضي الله عنه) reported Allaah Messenger (ﷺ) as saying:
When you hear the Mu’adhdhin, repeat what he says, then invoke a blessing on me (saying):
اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحمَّد، كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَعَلَى آلِ إبْرَاهِيمَ، إِنَّكَ حَميدٌ مَجِيدٌ، اللَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ عَلَى مُحمَّدٌ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ، كَمَا بَارَِكْتَ عَلَى إبْرَاهِيمَ وَعَلَى آلِ إبْرَاهِيمَ، إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ
O Allaah, send prayers upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad just as You have sent prayers upon Ibrahim and upon the family of Ibrahim, verily You are the Praiseworthy, the Glorious. O Allaah, bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad just as You have blessed Ibrahim and the family of Ibrahim, verily You are the Praiseworthy, the Glorious.
… for everyone who invokes a blessing on me will receive ten blessings from Allaah; then beg from Allaah al-Wasila for me, which is a rank in Paradise fitting for only one of Allaah’s servants, and I hope that I may be that one. If anyone who asks that I be given the Wasila, he will be assured of my intercession.
(Sahih Muslim 384)
4️⃣ Then ask Allaah (ﷻ) to grant the messenger al-Wasila by saying,
اللَّهُمَّ رَبَّ هَذِهِ الدَّعْوَةِ التَّامَّةِ وَالصَّلاَةِ الْقَائِمَةِ آتِ مُحَمَّدًا الْوَسِيلَةَ وَالْفَضِيلَةَ وَابْعَثْهُ مَقَامًا مَحْمُودًا الَّذِي وَعَدْتَهُ
“O Allaah, Lord of this perfect call and of the prayer which is established for all time, grant Muhammad the wasilah and excellency, and raise him up in a praiseworthy position which You have promised”
[Narrated by Jabir bin Abd Allaah (رضي الله عنه). Classed as sahih by al-Albani in sunan Abi dawud 529].
5️⃣ Lastly, make Du’a.
Reported Anas ibn Malik (رضي الله عنه) that the Prophet (ﷺ) said:
The supplication made between the adhan and the iqamah is not rejected.
(Classed as sahih by al-Albani in sunan Abi Dawud 521)
May Allaah (ﷻ) accept our acts of ibadah.
