Thinking Positively About People

The basis or origin of good and evil is thought. As we already know that; in Islam, intention forms the basic foundation of actions; Allaah (ﷻ) rewards deeds based on the real intention of an individual.

Having negative thought about people and their actions, and also judging them based on that thought when there isn’t any obvious proof to justify that thought is a character not to be found in a good Muslim. Such thoughts may lead to envy, quarrels, and even killings; these are some of the results of negative thoughts.

Abu ‘Abdullaah Tariq ibn Ashyam (رضي الله عنه) said “I heard the Messenger of Allaah (ﷺ), say, ‘If anyone says, “There is no god but Allaah” and rejects everything that is worshipped other than Allaah, his property and life are inviolable and his reckoning is in the hands of Allaah Almighty.”

(Riyadus-saliheen; chapter 49, Hadith no 391)

A good Muslim should make use of the obvious actions of people not mere thinking.

‘Abdullah ibn ‘Utba ibn Mas’ud (رضي الله عنه) reported that he heard ‘Umar ibn al-Khattab (رضي الله عنه) say, “Some people were dealt with by the revelation in the time of the Messenger of Allaah (ﷺ). The revelation has ceased. Now we deal with you according to what is clear to us from your actions. If anyone shows us good, we trust him and honour him. We know nothing of his inward. Allaah will call him to reckoning in respect of his inward. If anyone shows us evil, we do not trust him and do not believe him, even if he says that his inward is good.”

(Riyadus-saliheen chapter 49 Hadith no 395)

Allaah (ﷻ) is the only One to judge the inward intention of an individual as He (ﷻ) is the only One Who knows what is hidden and unknown.

A believer should always try to think positively about other people and their actions as that would attract peace of mind and love.

May Allaah (ﷻ) forgive us our sins and grant us deeper understanding.
