EPISODE 2️⃣ – CONSEQUENCE OF HYPOCRISY

Ibn Abbas (رضي الله عنه) held the opinion that Qarun was a paternal cousin to Musa (عليه سلام).
Qatadah said: ‘He was called “An-Nur” (the light) for he had a melodious voice while reciting the Taurat, but he became a hypocrite just like As-samiri who became a hypocrite too. Thus Qarun was destroyed because of his transgressions due to the wealth and riches he had.’

(Stories of the Qur’an by Ibn Katheer)

Shahr Ibn Haushab said: “he dragged his garment out of pride and arrogance.”

Allaah (ﷻ) mentioned the vastness of his wealth and riches so that its keys would have been a burden to a body of strong men. However he was advised by righteous people to not be arrogant and be ungrateful to Allaah (ﷻ) but he replied to them with arrogance and telling them that he was given that wealth because he deserved it. So Allaah (ﷻ) made the earth swallow him and his dwelling place.

Narrated Ibn Abbas (رضي الله عنه) and As-Sadiy that; Qarun gave a prostitute a sum of money to tell a lie on Musa (عليه سلام) while he was accompanied by other people that he [Musa(عليه سلام)] committed zina with her.

When the prostitute did what she was paid for, Musa (عليه سلام) trembled with fear and he performed two Rak’ahs and then said to her: “By Allaah! Tell me who hired you to do this?” She replied and told him it was Qarun. After the prostitute repentance, Musa (عليه سلام) invoked Allaah (ﷻ) against Qarun. Allaah (ﷻ) revealed to him that He subjugated the Earth to obey him. Musa (عليه سلام) commanded the earth to swallow Qarun and his dwelling place, and it was so. And Allaah knows best.

It was narrated from Qatadah that he said: “They would sink into the earth till the Day of Resurrection.”

Ibn Abbas (رضي الله عنه) said: “They sank into the earth till they reached the seventh earth.”

(Stories of the Quran by Ibn Katheer)

When people saw what happened to Qarun and his riches, for those who desired his position regretted and thanked Allaah (ﷻ).

One of the big lessons we learnt from this story is: whatever we have is from Allaah (ﷻ) and we should strive to use our wealth and knowledge to please Allaah. Do not allow yourself to be full of pride for what you have, Allaah (ﷻ) can take it anytime and you may end up a loser.

May Allaah (ﷻ) make us from those who receive His blessings and be grateful to Him.
