Worship Allaah, Not Ramadaan

من كان يعبد رمضان فإن رمضان رحل عنا، و من كان يعبد الله فإن الله حي لا يموت.

Whoever worshipped Ramadaan, then Ramadaan has left us. And whoever worshipped Allaah, then he is the Ever-living who never dies.

Dear brothers and sisters, the much anticipated glorious month, the month in which the Qur’aan was revealed, the month of the night of Majesty, the month of Islamic victory and the leader of all months, Ramadaan, has come and gone by the will of Allaah. The Shayaateen were chained by Allaah’s will to give us a chance to worship Allaah (ﷻ) without interference. Those of us that were blessed with an increase in Eemaan, may Allaah increase them more in it, and those who were deficient, may Allaah guide them to the straight path.

Sadly, as Ramadaan ends, many people shed their acts of worship, as if they were meant for only Ramadaan.

Allaah (ﷻ) says:
وَمَا خَلَقْتُ ٱلْجِنَّ وَٱلْإِنسَ إِلَّا لِيَعْبُدُونِ

And I did not create the jinn and mankind except to worship Me.
(Adh-dhaariyaat, 51:56)

clearly stating that the purpose of our creation is to worship Him. The absence of a time frame in the verse indicates that we are to worship Allaah for our entire lives, not just in a single month.

The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “… (Allaah says about the fasting person): …The fast is for Me. So I will reward (the fasting person) for it and the reward of good deeds is multiplied ten times”.
(Sahih al-Bukhari 1894)

Going by this, deeds are more rewarding if performed in a state of fasting. In Ramadan, we get to be in a state of fasting for a month. This does not mean performing the deeds in other months wouldn’t be rewarded.

There should be consistency in our acts of Ibadah (worship). Consistently doing good deeds is a sign of sincerity. If someone prays, fasts and does some acts of charity and then stops doing these things, this means that from the onset, his intention was not good.

As done in Ramadaan, we should keep a close tab of the obligatory prayers, the nafl (supererogatory) prayers, the qiyam-al-layl (⅓ night prayer) and so on. We should consider the nafl (voluntary) fasting, as the Prophet (ﷺ) said:

“Verily, there is a gate in Paradise called al-Rayyan, through which only those who fasted will enter on the Day of Resurrection…”

(Sahih al-Bukhari, 1896, Sahih Muslim 1152)
We shouldn’t hesitate to give zakah and perform Hajj (if we can afford it). We must safeguard our tongues from foul speech and our body parts from foul actions. We must treat each other and all human beings with courtesy and kindness. We must do all we have to to earn the pleasure of our Lord.

Our books of deeds are not closed after Ramadaan. They remain open till our lives expire. We all hope for the loftiest level of Jannah, and we can’t attain it if our deeds are deficient.

و في ذلك فليتنافس المتنافسون
So for this let the competitors compete.

(Al-Mutaffifeen, 83:26)

May Allaah increase us in Eemaan and health and make all our affairs easy for us.
Aameen.
