THE ROLE OF PARENTS (3)
Lastly, when an individual is about to get married, parents have a crucial role in ensuring that the child is married to someone compatible and of religious commitment and trustworthiness.
Ibn Taymiyyah (رحمه الله) said: “It is an obligation upon the guardian of a woman to fear Allaah with respect to who he marries her to. He must look at the prospective husband and see if he is compatible and qualified for her or not. He is marrying her to someone for her benefit, and not for his own benefit. He cannot marry her to someone who is deficient so that the guardian himself may attain some other benefits…..”[Majmoo Fataawa, 32/40]
The messenger of Allaah (ﷺ) said: “If there comes to you one whose religious commitment and attitude pleases you then marry (your female relative who is under your care) to him, for if you do not do that, there will be tribulation on earth and much corruption”.[Narrated by at Tirmidhi, ibn Majah and al Hakeem with a saheeh isnad.]
The wedding should also take place in accordance to the shariah.
People fall into the trap of beginning their married life with accumulation of sins because of the way the nikah takes place (free mixing, music, immoral dressing should be avoided). A lot of times, this is done under the watch of the parents.
Also, parents should fear Allaah (ﷻ) and beware of treating their daughters like a merchandise to be offered to the highest bidder.
And marry the unmarried among you and the righteous among your male slaves and female slaves. If they should be poor, Allaah will enrich them from His bounty, and Allaah is all-Encompassing and Knowing…
[Surah An-Noor Ayah 32]
Imam Ahmad and Baihaqi (رحمه الله) narrated from Aisha (رضي الله عنها) that the Messenger of Allaah (ﷺ) said: “the most blessed of women is the one who is most affordable (in terms of dowry and other expenses).”
Parents should encourage their children to marry from amongst the righteous people.
A man asked Hasan Ibn ‘Ali (رضي الله عنه), “I have a daughter and people have proposed to her, so to whom should I marry her?“ He said, “Marry her to one who fears Allaah (ﷻ), for if he loves her, he will honour her; and if he hates her, he will not wrong her.
May Allaah (ﷻء) grant us from our spouses and children the coolness our eyes and make us leaders amongst the righteous.
