EPISODE 4️⃣1️⃣ – HISTORICAL STRUCTURES OF MAKKAH AL-MUKARRAMAH (مكة المكرمة)
Part B- Al-Kaʿabah Al-Musharrafah (ٱلْكَعْبَة ٱلْمُشَرَّفَة)
Location: Center of Masjid al-Haraam in Makkah Province, Saudi Arabia.
Coordinates: 21°25′21.0″N 39°49′34.2″E
🕋 Undoubtedly the ultimate reason Makkah has all the glory surrounding it.
🕋 This is the sacred House of Allaah (ﷻ) on earth, the black cube located at the centre of al-Masjid al-Haraam in Makkah (and as claimed by some scientist, the centre of the globe).
🕋 The Ka’abah has been referred to by several names in the Qur’an which includes:
▪️Al-Bayt (ٱلْبَيْت) – The house. [Al-Baqara 2:125]
▪️Al-Bayt al-Ḥarām (ٱلْبَيْت ٱلْحَرَام) – The Sacred House.
[Al-Ma’idah 5:97]
▪️Baytik al-Muḥarram (بَيْتِكَ ٱلْمُحَرَّم) – Your Inviolable House.
[Ibrahim 14:37]
▪️Baytī (بَيْتِي) – My House.
[Al-Hajj 22:26]
▪️Al-Bayt al-ʿAtīq (ٱلْبَيْت ٱلْعَتِيق) – The Ancient House.
[Al-Hajj 22:29]
🕋 The scholars differed as to who built the Ka’abah. Some said that ‘it was the angels’, some said ‘Nabiy Adam (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ)’, others said ‘Ibraaheem al-Khalil (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ)’. What is more correct is the latter view as Allaah (ﷻ) says:
وَإِذۡ يَرۡفَعُ إِبۡرَٰهِـۧمُ ٱلۡقَوَاعِدَ مِنَ ٱلۡبَيۡتِ وَإِسۡمَٰعِيلُ رَبَّنَا تَقَبَّلۡ مِنَّآۖ إِنَّكَ أَنتَ ٱلسَّمِيعُ ٱلۡعَلِيمُ
And (mention) when Abraham was raising the foundations of the House and (with him) Ishmael, (saying), “Our Lord, accept (this) from us. Indeed You are the Hearing, the Knowing.

Pre-Islamic Era
🕋 The Ka’abah was built as a place for worship of One God by Ibraaheem (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) as commanded by Allaah (ﷻ),
وَإِذۡ بَوَّأۡنَا لِإِبۡرَٰهِيمَ مَكَانَ ٱلۡبَيۡتِ أَن لَّا تُشۡرِكۡ بِي شَيۡـٔٗا وَطَهِّرۡ بَيۡتِيَ لِلطَّآئِفِينَ وَٱلۡقَآئِمِينَ وَٱلرُّكَّعِ ٱلسُّجُودِ
And [mention, O Muhammad], when We designated for Abraham the site of the House, [saying], “Do not associate anything with Me and purify My House for those who perform Tawaf and those who stand [in prayer] and those who bow and prostrate.
[Surah Al-Hajj, Ayah 26]
…however, the Arabs turned the Ka’abah to a shrine for their gods such as Hubal, al-Lat etc.
🕋 In 570 CE, in the Year of the Elephant, an attempt to demolish the Ka’abah by the Abyssinian tyrant king, Abraha al-Ashram failed, leading to the destruction of Abraha and his army as recorded in Surah Al-Fil.
Post-Islamic Era
🕋 Circa 624 CE, the Ka’abah became the Muslim direction for prayer after previously facing al-Masjid al-Aqsa in al-Quds (Jerusalem). The commandment for this is found in Surah al-Baqarah Ayah 142-144.
🕋 When the Muslim conquered Makkah, all the false gods in the Ka’abah were demolished. Muhammad (ﷺ) poked the eyes of one of the idols which couldn’t defend itself or retaliate. Such is the ignorance of the disbelievers
🕋 Tawaf (circumambulation) of the Ka’abah is a fardaah (compulsory) act in the rites of Umra and Hajj.
Pilgrims go round the Ka’abah seven times starting from the Hajar al-Aswad in anticlockwise form.
