Sheikh Sudais Regarding Recent Events🕋
The following is the transcript of the Friday Sermon (13 Rabi Al-awwal 1442, October 30 2020) delivered by the Imaam of Masjidul Haram Sheikh Abdul Rahman Sudais regarding the recent events in France.
My dear brothers who have Eemaan, there is a very strong connection and love which the people of our Ummah have towards their Messenger (ﷺ), his life, and his traits. That does not lie in mere events or occasions. Rather, it is a relationship that endures throughout all circumstances of life, and it remains until life ends.
From this respected minbar – one of goodness, truth, and peace – we extend a sincere call to the entire world inviting it to adopt the true conduct of Allaah’s esteemed Prophet (ﷺ). That conduct urges us all to maintain complete peace and mercy between people who follow different sets of laws without any sort of abuse, repudiation, mockery, or negative insinuations towards religious leaders, and at the head of them come the immaculate Prophets (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ).
We accept all of Allaah’s Messengers without rejecting any of them. Furthermore, we say in the name of 1.8 billion Muslims that we condemn in the strongest and sternest of terms any sort of disparagement directed towards Allaah’s Prophets and Messengers. That is especially so in the case of Allaah’s Prophet of guidance and mercy: Our leader and Prophet, Muhammad (ﷺ).
Abusive drawings and inflammatory actions are nothing besides a form of terrorism, as well as extremism which feeds hatred and bigotry. It is not freedom of expression to aim ridicule and mockery at people’s religious leaders or things that people hold sacred. On the contrary, such behaviour violates ethics and decency and is unacceptable.
This is because it is a must for freedom of expression to give due consideration to human values which are based upon respecting the feelings of others. When expression goes beyond those values, it becomes an affront to ethics and freedoms. Such abuses give support to individuals with extremist ideas who seek to spread an atmosphere of hatred among societies with decent human values.
Moreover, Islam is innocent of all those negative things, and it is also innocent of being labelled with any type of terrorism. Islam is a religion of tolerance, mercy, and harmony. Its teachings do not contain terrorism, extremism, destruction, mockery, insults, or rejection of any Messengers sent by Allaah (ﷻ).
We also extend a further call for people to control their feelings, resist provocation, refrain from being rash, and avoid imprudent actions and unrestrained reactions.
Insults aimed at Allaah’s Prophets and Messengers do not cause them any harm since Allaah (ﷻ) grants them sufficient protection against those who may mock them. [Qur’an 5:67] Allaah (ﷻ) speaking well of His Prophets is far greater than anyone else acclaiming them, and a pertinent instance of this can be found at the beginning of Surah al-Qalam in the Qur’aan. [Qur’an 68:2-7]
The people of Islaam should rest assured that circumstances like the current ones eventually pass, and the only ones who will end up harmed by them are their advocates. If people do not support Allaah’s Messenger, Allaah (ﷻ) Himself has already given him support.
Allaah (ﷻ) grants His Messenger sufficient protection against those who may ridicule him. Allaah (ﷻ) will always bring about what He has decreed, but most people do not realize this.
May Allāh (ﷻ) bless our Shaykh, Abdul Rahman Sudais and preserve him and the Ummah upon goodness. Aameen.
