STINGINESS – THE WORST DISEASE OF THE HYPOCRITES

Allaah (ﷻ) says;

“So fear Allaah as much as you are able and listen and obey and spend [in the way of Allaah]; it is better for yourselves. And whoever is protected from the stinginess of his soul – it is those who will be the successful.”
(At-Taghabun 64:16)

As generosity negates stinginess, Allaah (ﷻ) has made a strong connectivity between charity and/or generous as means of being successful in the Hereafter.

Stinginess is one of the most dangerous diseases that ruin the life of an individual, no matter how wealthy and popular they are and a deadly barrier to the unity of the Ummah.

It ruins the health of the soul and weakens the Imaan, and as long as a person does not recover from stinginess, the condition of his or her Imaan remains poor.

This is not one of those motivational talks, but a prohibition of the One whose Hand my soul is. The leader of the believers also confirms this; “. . . There is no worse disease than miserliness (stinginess) . . .”
(Sahih al-Bukhari, 4383)

Allaah (ﷻ) chastises the stingy behavior of those who refuse to spend their wealth for what He (ﷻ) ordered them, such as being kind to parents and compassionate to relatives, orphans, the poor, the relative who is also a neighbor, the companion during travel, the needy wayfarer, the slaves and servants.

Such people do not give Allaah’s (ﷻ) right from their wealth, and they assist in the spread of stingy behavior.

Ask yourself: Where am I spending to? Jannah or Jahannam. How will I explain this to the One who has bestowed this wealth upon me?

To tell you how worst stinginess is, Allaah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said; “. . . Be on your guard against stinginess for stinginess destroyed those who were before you, as it incited them to shed blood and make lawful what was unlawful for them.”
(Sahih Muslim, 2578)

He (ﷺ) encouraged us to guide ourselves against it because it is the root of hatred.

He (ﷺ) used to seek refuge from Allaah (ﷻ) from; “. . . Laziness, weakness of old age, cowardice, stinginess, the trial of Al-Masih, and the punishment of the grave (Allāhumma innī aūdhu bika minal-kasali wal-harami wal-jubni wal-bukhli wa fitnatil-masīḥi waadhabil-qabr).”
(Jami` at-Tirmidhi, 3485)

The miser or stingy person is ungrateful for Allaah’s (ﷻ) favor, for its effect does not appear on him, whether in his food, clothes or what he gives.

__
Stinginess, when it comes to spending in the Way of Allaah (ﷻ) is classified as an enormity and disbelief and Allaah (ﷻ) have prepared for the disbelievers a disgraceful torment.

And the wise person is one: “ Who hold themselves accountable before they are held accountable.”

Reflect! And be prepared for the biggest gathering before He (ﷻ) Whose knowledge encompasses your deeds.

May Allaah (ﷻ) save us from stinginess, grant us mercy, and guide us through the straight path.

آمين يا رب العالمين
