EPISODE 3️⃣: After Eating
1️⃣Lick your hands when you are done eating before washing them or cleaning with a napkin.
The Prophet (ﷺ) said,
“When you eat, do not wipe your hands till you have licked it, or had it licked by somebody else.”
(Sahih Al-Bukhari, 5456)
It was narrated:
” The Messenger of Allaah (ﷺ) commanded the licking of fingers and the gleaning of the dish, saying, “You do not know in which portion the blessing lies.”
(Muslim, 136)
2️⃣Finish the meal with “Alhamdulillaah”.
The Prophet (ﷺ) said :
“Indeed Allaah is pleased with the slave who, upon eating his food or drinking his drink, he praises Him for it.”
(Jami` at-Tirmidhi, 1816)
Variations of ways to praise Allaah have been narrated from the Prophet.
▪️الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي كَفَانَا وَأَرْوَانَا، غَيْرَ مَكْفِيٍّ، وَلاَ مَكْفُورٍ
“Praise be to Allaah Who has satisfied our needs and quenched our thirst. Your favour cannot be compensated for or denied.”
(Sahih Al-Bukhari, 5459)
▪️الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّنَا، غَيْرَ مَكْفِيٍّ، وَلاَ مُوَدَّعٍ ـ وَلاَ مُسْتَغْنًى، رَبَّنَا
Praise be to You, O our Lord! Your favour cannot be compensated, nor can be left, nor can be dispensed with, O our Lord!
(Sahih Al-Bukhari, 5459)
The Messenger of Allaah (ﷺ) said,
“He who has taken food and says at the end:
الحمد الله الذي أطعمني هذا، ورزقنيه من غير حول منى ولا قوةٍ
‘Al- hamdu lillaahi-lladhi at’amani hadha, wa razaqanihi min ghairi haulin minni wa la quwwatin
All praise is due to Allaah Who has given me food to eat and provided it without any endeavour on my part or any power,
all his past sins will be forgiven.”
(Abu Dawud, 1 and At- Tirmidhi, 3457)
3️⃣Do not swallow food picked from the teeth.
The Prophet (ﷺ) said:
“…Whoever eats and removes the (leftover) food from between his teeth with his finger (or any foreign object, like a toothpick) should spit it out. What he removes (from the teeth) with his tongue, he may swallow. Whoever abides by this does well, and who does not, will not be sinful.”
(Sunan Abi Dawud, Hadith 36)
The reason for spitting what is removed with a toothpick is due to the possibility of it having blood on it.
(Badhlul Majhud, vol. 1 pg. 23)
4⃣Wash your hands to remove the traces of food from it.
The Prophet (ﷺ) said :
“If any of you goes to bed with a smell emanating from his hand, and he does not wash his hand, and something happens to him, he should not blame anyone but himself.”
(Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 3297)
5⃣Pray for who served you the food.
Say, as narrated from the Prophet (ﷺ):
“اللَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ لَهُمْ فِيمَا رَزَقْتَهُمْ وَاغْفِرْ لَهُمْ وَارْحَمْهُمْ”
Allaahu ma baarik lahum fee ma razaqtahum waghfir lahum wa-rhamhum
O Allaah, bless them in what you provided them, and have mercy on them.
(Muslim, 3/1615)
If the food is to break your fast, say:
أفطر عندكم الصائمون وأكل طعامكم الأبرار وصلت عليكم الملائكة
Aftara ‘indakumus saaimoon, wa akala ta’aamakumul abraar, wa sallat’ alaikumul malaaikah
“The observers of fast have broken their fast with you (this is the literal translation, but the meaning is: ‘May Allaah reward you for providing a fasting people with food to break their fast’); the pious people have eaten your food and the angels invoked blessings on you.”
(Abu Dawud)
