EPISODE 4️⃣9️⃣ – As-Safaa wal-Marwah (ٱلصَّفَا وَٱلْمَرْوَة)
⛰️ Safaa and Marwa are two small hills, connected to the larger Abu Qubais and Qaiqan mountains, respectively, in Mecca, Saudi Arabia.
⛰️ It is an obligatory element in the rituals of Hajj and Umrah to travel seven times back and forth between the two hills. This action is know as Sa’ee.
⛰️ The practice of Sa’ee at this location predates to the time of Nabiy Ibraaheem Khaliullaah (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) when his wife, Hajar (عليها السلام) ran in between them in search of water for her infant baby.
⛰️ Hence, Hajar’s (عليها السلام) effort has been blessed by Allaah (ﷻ) that several millions of pilgrims today repeat the exercise.
⛰️ Pre-Islamic period, the people of Makkah had two idols placed on the two hills, or according to another source, used to visit the idol Manat at Qudaid (near Mecca) in the state of Ihram before going about with the rituals of their pilgrimage.
⛰️ This pre-Islamic practice discouraged many of the Ansars from performing Sa’ee as they consider it as an act of shirk until Allaah (ﷻ) revealed the 158th Ayah of Surah al-Baqarah as recorded in Sahih Imam al-Bukhari.
Narrated by ‘Asim ibn Sulaiman (رضي الله عنه):
I asked Anas ibn Malik (رضي الله عنه) about Safaa and Marwa. Anas replied, “We used to consider (i.e. going around) them a custom of the Pre-islamic period of Ignorance, so when Islam came, we gave up going around them. Then Allaah revealed”
Indeed, as-Safa and al-Marwah are among the symbols of Allaah. So whoever makes Hajj to the House or performs ‘umrah – there is no blame upon him for walking between them. And whoever volunteers good – then indeed, Allaah is appreciative and Knowing. (Sura al-Baqarah 2:158)
[Sahih al-Bukhari, Volume 6, Book 60, Number 23. Also the hadith of Aisha’ (رضي الله عنها) as narrated by Urwa (رضي الله عنه) in Sahih al-Bukhari, Volume 6, Book 60, Number 22]
⛰️ The walk away between the two hills is known as Mas’aa.
⛰️ The menstruating women are allowed to perform the Sa’ee because the path of the two mountains (Mas’aa) is not considered to be part of al-Masjid al-Haraam.
👏🏾 May Allaah (ﷻ) make it easy for us so that we may also perform Hajj to His house at least once in our lifetime. Ameen.
