EPISODE 3️⃣9️⃣ – MAKKAH AL-MUKARRAMAH (مكة المكرمة)
Part C – Early History and the Conquest
﷽
🕋 After the destruction of Abraha and his army, the Ka’aba became more popular and attracts visitors from around the Arab world. Makkah became a major trade center, thanks for the prayer of Nabiy Ibrahim (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) as recorded in the Qur’an chapter 14 verse 37.
فَٱجۡعَلۡ أَفۡـِٔدَةٗ مِّنَ ٱلنَّاسِ تَهۡوِيٓ إِلَيۡهِمۡ
… So make hearts among the people incline toward them…
[Surah Ibrahim, Ayah 37]
🕋 The blessing of the well of Zamzam was a major contributor to the economic burgeoning of Makkah. The well provides water in abundance which is a scarce resource in the Arab desert.

Rise of Islam and the Conquest
➖ ➖ ➖
🕋 Once the Prophet (ﷺ) was sitting in the cave of Hira inside the Jabal an-Nūr mountain, the Archangel Jubril (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) appeared to him with the first revelation. This ultimately was the birth of Islam in Makkah.
🕋 The Prophet (ﷺ) began preaching the religion of Allaah which wasn’t quite welcomed by many of the Arab tribes. Those whom Allaah Wills to be guided were guided, but due to their minority population as against the majority pagans, persecution and oppression unfolds until Allaah (ﷻ) commanded the believers to migrate to Abyssinia and later to Medina.
🕋 In Medina, the Prophet (ﷺ) was able to spread Islam to the neighbouring communities, and gradually, the Muslim population began to rise.
🕋 After various battles (such as the Battle of Badr in 624 AD, Battle of Uhud in 625, and Battle of Khandaq in 627 CE) between the Muslims of Medina and the Arab pagans, the Muslims conquered Makkah in 8 AH.
🕋 On 18 Ramadan 8 AH (according to the more popular record), the Muslim army entered Makkah on four fronts with over 10,000 soldiers. This is the largest Muslim army preceding the date.
⚔️ The main column consisting of the Prophet (ﷺ) was led by Abu Ubaydah ibn al-Jarrah (رضي الله عنه) which entered Makkah through the main Medina route, from the north-west near Azakhir.
⚔️ The second column was led by Zubayr ibn al-Awam (رضي الله عنه) which entered Makkah from the south-west, through a pass west of Kuda hill.
⚔️ The third column under the commandant of Ali ibn Abi Talib (رضي الله عنه) entered from the south through Kudai.
⚔️ The last column under the leadership of ‘The Sword of Allaah’, Khalid ibn al-Walid (رضي الله عنه) entered from the north-east, through Khandama and Lait.
🕋 The conquest was almost bloodless from all columns except from the last column of ibn al-Walid who was confronted by Ikrimah and Sufwan fighters. The Muslims conquered the enemy, suffering two casualties and the enemy’s twelve.
🕋 On the conquest, the Prophet (ﷺ) made the following statement:
Narrated Mujahid:
Allaah’s Apostle got up on the day of the Conquest of Makkah and said, “Allaah has made Makkah a sanctuary since the day He created the heavens and the earth, and it will remain a sanctuary by virtue of the sanctity Allaah has bestowed on it till the Day of Resurrection. It (i.e. fighting in it) was not made lawful to anyone before me!, nor will it be made lawful to anyone after me, and it was not made lawful for me except for a short period of time. Its game should not be chased, nor should its trees be cut, nor its vegetation or grass uprooted, not its Luqata (i.e. Most things) picked up except by one who makes a public announcement about it.” Al-Abbas bin ‘Abdul Muttalib (رضي الله عنه) said, “Except the Idhkhir, O Allaah’s Apostle, as it is indispensable for blacksmiths and houses.“ On that, the Prophet (ﷺ) kept quiet and then said, “Except the Idhkhir as it is lawful to cut.”
[Sahih Bukhari, Volume 5, Book 59, Number 603]
